Exercise Plans

I've been running about 3 times a week and nothing else.  I was planning on doing P90x but I don't know how I'm going to fit all that in during the work week.  Just looking for ideas and wanted to know what you all did.

So, what are your exercise plans?  What kind of workouts do you do?  How do you spread them out during the week?

Re: Exercise Plans

  • I do work out with a trainer- but most of the stuff can be done on your own. I usually do cardio 2 days a week and then weights with some cardio 2 days a week. I focus on upper body one of the weight days and lower body the other. Most can be done without a gym, but I prefer heavier weights so I usually go to the gym.

Upper body- usually sets of chest press (with dumbbells), flys and dumbell rows (3 sets of 15 is typical).  Then curls, shoulder press and one arm kick backs. I usually include some type of cardio in between- jumping jacks, mountain climbers, jump rope etc.

Legs and lower- usually squats, lunges, stepups with weights, lots of work mimicking step aerobics and calf raises.

Most of the exercises that are great I find on Women's Health magazine online- its worth a look!

  • Pre-pregnancy I was doing the P90x 2 times a week. Only two though, because it kicked my butt and made me so sore! I went swimming 2 days a week as well. After I pop this baby out, I want to start running and even participate in some 5k's. I also need to go on a major diet.
  • I pretty much just run. It had been sporadic, with no real "plan" per se, unless I was training for a race and then I'd just follow Hal Higdon's plan or something. I typically run anywhere from 2-5 miles a shot, 3-5 times a week. Last week tho I decided it would be good to aim for a set weekly mileage, so I picked 20 (which isn't much, admittedly) as a goal, and I hit it, and was doing it again this week. But then I strained my achilles so now I'm sidelined til that simmers down. So much for goals!

I am bad in that I rely too much on cardio. I just can't stand doing weight work. I know I should, I know all the reasons, blah blah, but I don't care. It bores me to tears. I have started doing some arm weight exercises at home (saw them on Yahoo's newsfeed...it "promises" toned arms in no time...yeah, right) and do that after I run. Cause my arms have gotten flabby. They were nice and toned before.

I have also started getting up early and getting in a quick 2-3 miler before work. It sucks at first, but feels great to have it done, and it does give me energy in the morning. Any chance you can try that? And believe me, I am not a morning person, so it's a shock to me I've been able to do it. Maybe give it a whirl?

  • After dance is over, I'm going to be doing some classes offered by my gym. I will do zumba extreme, turbo kick, total body conditioning, arms and and (which the ARM part always makes me cry) and butts and guts. I plan on going 4 days a week to the classes then I'm going to speed walk with the stroller. I'll still be teaching dance 3 days a week too. I'm also joining weight watchers and going on a major diet.

  • My game plan is to work out 6 days a week. MWF, C25k, STTh 30DS.  I've been doing the C25k - now I just need to add the 30DS to the routine.

  • I have a simple goal and that is it walk on my treadmill at 3mph for at least 45 minutes every night.

I've wanted to do that but it's just so hard to get up!  It takes me about 45 minutes to drive to work so I already have to get up at 7:15.  The thought of getting up at 6 makes me sleepy.

This is pretty much my plan.  If the weather will ever let me start C25K, I'm hoping to get into the swing of that a few times a week, add in teh 30DS on a couple of the off days.

I'm not gym-less. :(  Tonia - Totally jealous you're doing Turbo Kick.  I did that class for like a year and a half twice a week - that's how I lost weight for the wedding and kept most of it off for a while.  Then they cut it back to only once a week, then they cancelled it at my gym in December.  So I pretty much stoppe working out, and now I've put all my weight back on.  I SO miss Turbo kick.  Was the most fun but hardest 1 hour workout I've ever done.

  • I'm doing a lot of cardio. Lately I spend 45-80 min on the elliptical every day that I can, which usually ends up being 4 or 5 days a week. I'm trying to get some weights into my routine too, but so far I keep forgetting.

This has gone on for 2 weeks (before that I'd do 30 min maybe 3 days a week, but I was too sick for all of March to exercise so I'm trying to make up for it), and combined with watching what I eat (not exactly dieting, but very little alcohol or snacking and dinners are more veggie-based), my weight hasn't budged. sigh! I can't bear to go back on the 1100 cal/day diet I was on pre-wedding. At least then I was starving and angry for a happy reason, this time it would feel pointless.

I used to do pilates every week, but I haven't been since I broke my tailbone last month, and I'm having trouble making myself go back. I broke my tailbone on the way to pilates, so that may be part of my problem.

  • I work out 4 to 5 days a week, usually after work or first thing in the morning on weekends. I go every Monday, Saturday & Sunday for sure, the other 1 or 2 days depend on H's schedule. Thursday is always my off day.

My ''plan'' varies day to day. I try to mix it up so I don't get bored. It's usually something like this:

    - 200 sit-ups on the exercise ball (which I'm going to have to lessen since it's getting a bit uncomfortable)

    - a mix of arm & leg weight machines and free weights: 5 sets of 10 on each, I try to do 2 different leg and 2 different arm each day

    - 30 to 45 minutes on a bike or elliptical - right now mostly bike because the elliptical gets my heart rate too high

    - 10 minute cool down walk on a treadmill or around the track

I know, I'm surprised I've become a convert. The thought of working out in the morning has always made me cranky. My bones are creaky at that time of day and my muscles usually don't wake up until I've been at work for a few hours.

It's hard and with getting ready for work, it can be a pain in the butt. The first time I did it (besides here and there before the wedding when I had insomnia and got sick of tossing and turning and just figured I'd do something) was because I had plans after work and knew I wouldn't be able to run. Now, I try to do it once a week at least, because it means I am "off" that night. I get up at 5:15, run for a half hour and am home by 6:05, stretching and in the shower at my normal 6:30.

I've even entertained the idea of doing a second run one night, get a double boost. Still may.

Yes I love that class. It's by far my favorite. I can't wait to get back to it and lose my tummy pooch.

  • Disclaimer: I've been to the gym once since I've been pregnant :/ Although, now that I have more energy, I plan on starting up regularly again.

I try to get there 3-4 times a week. I do cardio (usuall about 2 miles on the elliptical). Then I do arms...curls with dumbbells (3 sets of 12, 10 and 8), kickbacks, then a few other things which honestly I don't know what they're called! I use the lat pulldown machine too.

For abs, I use the incline/decline bench (all the way back) and hold a 10 lb. weight to my chest. Sometimes I do planks too. Although now that I'm getting bigger, these are probably out.

For legs, I mostly use machines....the thigh abduction and adduction, the glute machine and that' about it. I don't really work my legs that much.

I have dumbbells at home too for nights when I'm too lazy to go to the gym, at least I can do arms if I want to.

  • I give all you gym-goers a lot of credit.  The gym and I never jived; I always wanted it to, but it always became such a chore.  I'm embarrased to admit how much money I spent on gym memberships in my early 20s that was a total loss.

I need to have fun when I work out, so classes work best for me.  I ideally do 2-3 cardio classes a week.  Mostly Zumba, but now my Zumba studio also offers Zumba in combination with toning, "Dancing with the Steps" (a seriously good workout), etc, so I'm also getting toning in the mix during most classes.  Once a week I have been doing a yoga class, which has helped my strength, but sadly my yoga studio just closed, so I'm not sure what my gameplan is.

I only go to my gym for the classes. It's cheaper here than signing up for individual classes.

I've been pretty much forcing myself to go. I feel awful all the time and have no energy, but I know the exercise is good for me and I actually feel a little better while I'm exercising.

I feel like I need to get it in now, because while I'm back in school I'll be missing out on the gym Monday thru Friday.

I don't really think it helped weight loss, but my abs were beautiful! I think it's a much more intense workout than most people think, it's mostly muscle toning but you still sweat a lot from the positions, and you use muscles you don't otherwise use, like situps will get your abs but "favorites" will get your transverse abs. Other people noticed improvements on their butts, but I have trouble holding those positions, my legs get too sore. I also notice my back is sorer when I'm not doing pilates.

I haven't done the reformer though, my instructor only does reformer one on one, and I'd rather just pay for a group class on a mat with balls and rollers.

where do you do zumba? I used to take classes in Shrewsbury, but then I joined a choir and they're both at the same time. Plus all my ex-coworkers are in that class and I don't really want to see them... but I miss zumba! It's definitely more fun than the elliptical.

My pilates studio also does yoga, but it's up in Leominster, kind of a hike.

I am also thinking of doing yoga at my gym 1-2 days a week to help me relax and stretch.
