Formula mamas - guess what you have to look forward to!

We've been spending $30-$40 a week on formula, which makes our weekly grocery bill $90-$110 or so.

This week, we're transitioning Ellie to cow's milk by mixing half formula and half whole milk. So, we didn't have to buy and formula.

And....drumroll....

Our grocery bill was only $47.

It's a good day!

  • yay!!

my monster eats a lot. I do 1/2 bm and 1/2 ff (not in the same bottle, I just alternate feedings) and I am glad i can save a little. Idk how I will afford it once he's eating more lol :)

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Growing boy! We did that too (part BM, part FF) until she self-weaned at 8 months. then, the grocery bill started hurting.

I am SO excited to not have to buy it anymore. She seems to be tolerating cow's milk just fine so next week we'll go straight cow's milk. Yay!

  • that's good she'll drink it! I think nate will tolerate it just fine when the time comes. he loves cold bottles.

  • That's great Ames!

Since we're talking about formula....how did you guys go about choosing one for your baby? Did your doctor recommend one or did you just buy a couple different ones and try them out?

I plan on bf-ing exclusively for the first few months, but I wanted to have a backup plan just in case.

I was just going to post this exact same thing.

  • I got a LOT of samples in the mail and from my doctor's office and the hospital, so we used those to gauge what she liked and didn't like. From the get-go she had a preference for the ready-to-feed formula over the powder. I don't know if it's sweeter, maybe? It's definitely thicker though so maybe that was it.

Anyway, she had a lot of spit up when we first started doing the 1/2 and 1/2, so we started using the Similac Spit Up formula, which is a little thicker than the regular kind, and that seemed to settle better on her stomach. And then, when she self weaned, we just stuck with that kind since it was what we'd been mixing with her BM.

The ready to feed is a little more costly than powdered. Depending on the store, it is anywhere from $4-$6 a quart here. (We always get it at Walmart so it's in the $4 range.) But, she just really seemed to like it much better.

  • I've heard some people stock up on formula, is that a bad idea until you get a better feel for what baby will like?

At the hospital they gave Enfamil Newborn Nursettes. They smell terrible and he spilled it everywhere bc he acts like he's never eaten and he's a good sucker. While I was pregnant, I had received a sample pack of Enfamil and a sample pack of Similac. They each came with a regular formula and a gentle one. When we got home from the hospital, I tried giving him the Enfamil Newborn in a bottle instead and he did really well. So we just used that for about 2 weeks. Then he was pretty gassy so we tried the Enfamil Gentelease that we got free and he did much better so we've just stuck with that. (All my mom friends have always used the Enfamil Gentle eventually so I figured we might as well try it) He did have 4 days of a weird poop schedule and I almost switched again but my pedi said not to yet. I still have the Similac package and I figure if in a couple more weeks he doesn't use it for whatever reason, I'll give it away.

I wouldn't to be honest. You just never know what he/she will like. They may need soy or like Ames said the thicker kind etc. Also they expire so if you don't go through it all bc you BF too or something it'll be a waste.

Agreed. Just sign up for as many samples as you can get (Enfamil, Similac, Gerber) and then try them out to see what he/she likes before you buy up a bunch.

That's sort of my thoughts on it was well.

One of my cousins stocked up and then her daughter ended up needing Soy so she had all this unusable formula. The dumba$s actually MIXED the regular with the soy to "use some up" even though it made her kid sick. She isn't the brightest bulb in the box.

    Surprise

    poor baby.

  • I know, right? I guess when her mom found out she pretty much ripped her a new a$s.

  • I don't get why people do things like that.

Ellie can't tolerate citrus fruits yet, and they turn her bum red. So, we don't give them to her! Simple logic. I don't get people who don't get it.

  • I signed up on a lot of different websites and got a ton of formula samples and coupons.  I almost gave away the formula since I "KNEW" I would EBF.  So glad I saved everything since it worked out great having stuff in the house.  My pedi reccommended Similac Sensitive since Nate had a lot of gasfussiness when eating.  I'm excited to mix formulacow's milk in the future; hurray for saving $$!

  • Good point, Jess! Don't give away your formula samples until you know for sure you won't need them. My sister made that mistake!

Can y'all believe Ellie's birthday is only a week away? Crying

  • Thanks for the tips everyone!!

And no, I cannot believe Ellie is turning 1!!!!
