Why is it when you order a salad at a restaurant it tastes great.
And when you try and be good and make one for home, with the same stuff, it tastes like homemade?
Any tips ladies?
Re: Riddle Me This... (food)
No idea. This reminds me a little bit of the Eddie Murphy stand up about when he was little and his mom making him a hamburger 'just like McDonalds', and the bread turned into pink dough because of the ketchup. LOL
Maaaybe it's the dressing???
Maybe it's because restaurant food always tastes better than homemade even something simple like a salad or plain white rice.
I think Shelley is right. Food always taste better when someone else makes it.
What did you put in your salad?

I felt this way until last year, when I joined a CSA, and everything in my salad was fan-fricken-tastic.
This year: No CSA for me. :-(
Nothing exciting today, desperately need to shop this weekend. Just romaine, tuna, some shredded parm, few croutons and balsmic vin on top.
But even simple things like a caesar salad just aren't the same.
Maybe Kathy is on to something with better ingredients, I could splurge a bit at the fresh market by me.
I have been craving salads with the warmer weather, but making and bringing them for lunch just doesn't have the same taste.

I think it's the someone else making it. My mom makes a mean salad and I can never recreate it.
Her trick, which isn't what they do at restaurants so it's not really helpful but she puts the dressing on the lettuce and then puts the other veggies on. At least that's what she thinks her trick is.
I always put some fresh lemon juice onto my caeser salads when I make them at home.
I love apple or pear slices in my salads.

I think it's all in the ingredients.
When we make salads, we always use produce that we get from Trader Joe's or Earth Fare-- the flavors are so much richer than the produce from the grocery store. Also, I love mixing fresh baby spinach in my salads along with seeds and/or nuts. Sunflower and chia seeds are some of my FAVORITE things to put in salads for a little flavor and extra crunch. If you like peppers, roasted red peppers are amazing in just about any salad

i use tj's produce and it still sucks when i make it. i also use baby spinach. i guess i just like when other people make things for me! i'm snobby like that :P

I don't think most restaurants use organic produce either (or if they do, they announce it in big bold lettering and triple the price) but I think their food is fresher than stuff from regualar grocery stores.
You know what drives me crazy? Going to a restaurant that has five or six salads on the menu and all of them have meat!! Sometimes I feel like a salad because I want something lighter. Jerks.
Welcome to the dark side
LOL just ask for no meat silly girl!

I recently figured out one reason I don't tend to like salad I bring to work, or even sometimes cooked at home. I don't like my salad fixings or dressing super cold. Most restaurants keep their lettuce closer to room temp or just on top of ice, and the salad dressing is kept on ice, but not fully refrigerated during most of the day. So I've started pulling out my lettuce and leaving it out for like 10/20 min before I eat it, and I do the same with the salad dressing, or I even give a quick heat in the microwave.
This may be my weird thing, since I don't really like many foods cold.
I also think it has to do with me not preparing it, I will always eat salad at IL's when we are there for dinner, but at home, not so much.
