I really need to talk about it.
Re: Who saw Black Swan?
I didn't think it was worth all of the hype but I am still pondering a few things. DS woke up 20 minutes into the movie so I did have to pause and come back, so I may have missed a few things.
Natalie Portman did a great job playing the emotional turmoil but it was painfully obvious she did not do all of that dancing. The technique took years and years of hardcore dancing.
1. I wish they had delved into more of the mother/daughter relationship. Did anyone "pick up on" more of this? It was so odd how her mother did everything for her (dressed and undressed her, no boundaries at all, it seemed).
2. So she was losing her mind, right. And she had to morph into her archenemy (the black swan) in order to dance the part since it was a struggle for her. She projected this onto Lily because Lily barged into her audition and, in her mind, ruined it and wanted to be her.
Or something. Am I understanding this right?
This is basically what I took away from it. But this type of movie isn't really my "thing" so I may misinterpret things. All the relationships between the characters were weird. Overall it was just...weird.
Yup! You got i! She was crazy, and her mother was crazy. Ha ha ha. I really liked it.
I saw it. I mostly liked it, but it's one of those movies I never want to watch it again, you know? We saw it in the theater, and I actually had to leave for a bit because the shaky cam was making me nauseated. (I can't wait til that trend dies out.)
On 1, there's speculation that the mother was also a figment of her imagination, because no one besides Lily actually interacted with her. Which I find really interesting, but I'm not sure I buy. But yeah, her mother was totally infantalizing her. I mean, her room looked like a 5 year old girl decorated it. But her mother's antics explained a lot about the way she behaved - she put such pressure on her to be successful as a dancer, since she gave up her career when she had her.
And on 2, yes, she was totally losing her mind. She had all of her mom's expectations of greatness on her, and Lily got to set her own expectations. There were a few scenes, though, when she was delusional where she saw other dancers' faces and not just Lily's. So I think she kind of assumed everyone was out to get her.
Trippy and crazy, and it's difficult to know what was real and what wasn't. (Like when she went to visit Beth in the hospital -creeeepeee!) But I thought Natalie Portman was great in the role, and Mila Kunis was solid. And I am always happy to see Winona Ryder - I so want her to be awesome again, heh.
Ohh I hadn't thought of her mom being a figament of her imagination!
Did the Ecstacy night with Lily really happen? And the girl-girl scene? I thought it was really confusing when Lily denied it. Then I couldn't tell if she was just playing with Nina. But then why would she since Nina was the only one who thought Lily was out to get her.
What was up with the screwing scene when she was practicing? She saw herself screwing Thomas then saw him change into the cat. WTF? Was she imagining this or was she really screwing him?
And I also had no idea if the scenes with Beth (Winona Ryder) were real or not.
I think she went out with Lily, and I think she took the ecstasy. But I think the rest of it, aside from the dancing, was delusions. And I have no idea what was going on with her and Thomas. My guess would be that she slept with him, but I'm not sure on that. And I think she did visit Beth, but she attacked Beth, because that bloody nail file fell on the floor in the elevator. (I think, it's been a while.)
