Mara or MrsB*

Got any tips for picking a nice grey color?

I'm finding that many of the sample cards I picked up are either purply, bluish or brown.  I dont know if I'm comparing them too much to each other or what...

Re: Mara or MrsB*

  • I had never done this with paint colors in the past, but I painted a bunch of poster board with various grays and taped them up on the wall for a few days to see how they looked in different light.  Some definitely looked more brown/blue once we saw them on the poster board.
  • Grab the paint swatch of EVERY gray they have in the store, and take them all home.  Look at them in the actual room that you're going to paint so that the lighting is the same, and then narrow it down.  Yes, when you compare them you'll see that many of them have purple or brown undertones, etc.  If you can narrow it down to a couple, I would definitely do what MrsB suggested - get sample pots of them (they're only a couple bucks each).  Although I would recommend painting a square on the wall itself to see what they look like (it could look a little different painted on paper/posterboard than on the wall).

If you like the cool, medium gray tones, I can let you know what our basement color is (I don't have it on me right now).

    HTH!
