Do you feel rushed when someone gives you a book to read?

Okay so one of my many quirks is that I don't typically borrow ANYTHING from anyone.  Especially with books...if I want it I just get it myself.  I don't like to borrow things because I am afraid I won't return them in the same condition.  I am also not a huge fan of letting others borrow things because often times they are not returned.  For example the last three books I have lent out have still not been returned.

Anyways my FIL gave me a book on Sunday that he says I must read.  I am currently in the middle of one book plus I have several baby books I am reading.  Blehh...I feel rushed to read his so I can give it back.

Re: Do you feel rushed when someone gives you a book to read?

  • I do but don't feel that way.

I cannot stand it when people don't return things. I really got burned in college on loaning clothes to friends. 1 friend took forever returning a shirt, despite my calling and calling asking her to return it so I could wear it. She brought it over and had ruined it. It was really a brand new shirt. This happened a few times with friends (ruining my clothes).

I loaned a book to my friend here and asked for it back last summer so I could read it again before the baby came and she has yet to return it.

I am not loaning people anything anymore. If I give it to someone, I fully expect to never see it again.

  • I don't, but usually I am borrowing books from friends who I don't see often (so they don't expect them back for months) or my uncle who tells me to pass them on to someone else because he has too many books in his house already.  Next time you see your FIL I would just let him know that you are looking forward to reading the book but are not sure how soon you can get to it, and ask if he is in a rush to get it back.

A book lending story: my dad gave me a long biography (as a gift), which I was slowly working through.  He reads faster than I do and I knew he was interested in it so I let him borrow it and made it clear that I wanted it back.  He lent it to someone at work after he finished and hasn't seen it since.

  • I wouldn't feel that way so much with my IL's. I think when people lend out books (I do it pretty often since I own a lot on account of being an Amazon junkie), I don't expect them back for at least a month.

Since it's your FIL, maybe in a week or 2 if you haven't started it yet, you can bring it with you when you see them and offer to return it. If he says to keep it, then just read it next.

  • Not terribly rushed.  I don't feel like I need to get it back immediately.  I do tend to make it the next book I read though instead of pushing it off towards the bottom of my pile. I still take my time to read it ... sometimes I'm done in a day or 2 and recently with baby reading sometimes it takes me a few months.  If I'm not really interested or don't really have time I sometimes skim through to get the gist (just in case they want to talk about it) and return it early.

If you're worried about forgetting who gave it to you put their name on a post-it and stick it in the book. I always put my name in my own books (at least in pencil so it can be erased) before I pass them on to someone else if I want them back.  Having my name inside is usually a good reminder.

  • In theory i am a book hoarder and don't like to lend them out. That being said, when I talk to someone about a book and am able to go grab it and give it to them to read I really enjoy sharing, and usually don't mind if I don't get it back. I also ususally buy paperback so I don't go broke on books :-) On the other side, I don't borrow books unless it is from my family. This is partly because I don't want to destroy the book, but also because if I don't like it and someone recommended it I feel bad telling them I didn't enjoy it.

OMG me too!  In college all of my clothes were never returned.  I should have learned my lesson there.

I get so irritated when things are not returned to me in a timely manner...or in some cases at all.
