Long Shot: Has anyone ever worn a walking boot?

I went to a medical supply place and had a high walking boot put on today.  It was painful to get into because it requires that my foot be at a 90* angle, which is just hard to do right now.

But I got into it, hopped to the car with the walker and got home.

4 1/2 hours after having it first put on, I was in tears and had to have DH take the boot off and put my splint back on.  I was feeling serious pressure on the ball of my foot and up into my toes that resulted in a burning and tingling sensation.  It was light at first, but had gotten dramatically worse, and nothing I do would bring any relief from the sensation.

Has anyone worn one of these and had a similar sensation?  Was it to be expected?  Was it short-lived?  I tried calling the orthopedist who prescribed the boot but his office is already closed for the day, so I'll follow up tomorrow.

Re: Long Shot: Has anyone ever worn a walking boot?

  • I only wore a short boot when I broke my 5th metatarsal. It was basically to keep my foot from flexing, I was able to move my ankle, etc.  I don't know what bone you broke or what needs to be immobilized but I would call your doc and let them know what is going on.

Burning/tingling doesn't sound like bone pain, but rather a nerve issue- is it continuing now that you are out of the boot and back in the splint?

  • I broke my 5th metatarsal as well, but it's something called a Jones Fracture, which the doctor described as being different from fractures they usually see in that bone.  It's a denser section of bone and is apparently slower to heal.  The boot I'm in goes up my calf to below my knee, which is the same height as the splint I was given in the ER.

I agree that it's a nerve issue - it feels almost like I was in my sneakers and walking around far too much, but it's relentless and it kept getting worse.  Taking the boot off brought me immediate relief.  I'm in the splint and don't have a single complaint.

  • I was given this boot when I broke my foot a few years ago.

Are you wearing a sock with it?  I couldn't stand the heat or rubbing of the sock, so I went barefoot.

It sounds like the boot might be too tight if the pressure released immediately upon removal.  I'm sure you tried loosening the straps and playing with the amount of air pumped into the cast area, but if you haven't it might be worth it.  Good luck and I hope your doctor can help you soon!

  • I wore a boot when I when I had 3 fractures in my foot.  I had to wear a sock because I was getting sores from it.  However, I didn't have any extra pain from it.

My DH is actually in my boot right now because he has a stress fracture in his metatarsal as well.  He hasn't had any of the pain you are experiencing either.  It does take some getting used to though.

I have a liner of sorts - it was placed on my foot when I got the splint in the ER, and when I got the boot, she recommended that I keep it on.  It's lightweight and doesn't irritate me.

I have the boot back on finally and I can already feel the pressure beginning and I cannot, for the life of me, keep my heel down and in contact with the base of the boot.  We only pumped 2-3 pumps of air into the bladder, so all I can think is to not inflate it at all.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I appreciate the feedback!  This is making me insane.

  • I wore one last year i believe it was. I have what is called Plantar Fasciitis (sp?). I never got the burning pain you are talking about. I have to agree that i think your may be to small. First off you should not at all have trouble getting it on. I would definitely call your doctors office first thing in the morning about it.

  • The trouble with getting it on is, I believe, just related to the actual break itself as well as the ankle sprain.  It's uncomfortable to have make my foot a 90* angle from my leg.

I was able to sleep with it on last night by loosening the straps over my foot and deflating the cast.  I didn't get any of the burning sensation.

I called the doctor's office this morning to find out if I had to sleep in the boot and the nurse said that I didn't even have to wear it if I was just lying down watching TV.  It's necessary when I'm moving, so when I get up to use the restroom, I put it on, and when I finally try to scoot up the steps to get a shower tonight or tomorrow night, I'll certainly put it on for that.  But when I found out I could leave it off the majority of the time, I told her that she was my new favorite person in the whole wide world.
