Anyone with a green thumb out there?

I'm looking for a good, hearty perennial to plant in our mailbox flower bed.  I've just put annuals in it the past few years (like pansies and petunias), but they don't seem to hold up too well to the dry CO weather.  They need to be watered like every day for all summer.  I'm not that dedicated.

I'm hoping to plant some bulbs this fall (tulips and daffodill), but any ideas for something low maintenance that will be colorful all summer?

I have some columbines in a round flower bed in the middle of our yard - it's columbines, day lillies, and mums.  I was hoping for something different.  Worst case, I guess I could just plant more columbines...
