We are thinking of replacing the kitchen counters in the new house. We went to Lowes and found one we liked, but do you have any independant co recs? I tried google, but got a bunch of crap so Id thought Id ask here with all of the homeowners.
Re: Granite countertop rec?
We haven't used them for countertopa, but we've dealt with them when doing our patio and I have nothing but great things to say about them.

I know my mom priced out at Lowes and her friend recommended a place in or around Shelby Twp. I am not sure if this is exactly the place, but it sounds familiar. In any case, she found the smaller company was half the price of Lowes...I have heard that granite and stone places are most often a lot cheaper than Lowes/Home Depot.

The Granite Top Shop on 7 mile in Livonia. (It's called Granite City now...) http://www.granitecitymi.com/
They had the absolute lowest prices when we were looking 3 years ago ($39/sq ft installed + free stainless undermount sink). They also had tons of slab samples in their warehouse. My parents had been searching for granite for about 6 months and finally narrowed down their choice to a sample from this place. They recommended the place to us and DH and I selected the exact color we wanted in about a day. Highly recommend them to anyone!!
Funny story: my parents' granite was installed the same day ours was. My dad came over to our house in the morning, then back to his house in the afternoon. The installation crew was like, "WTH???
" I still laugh about it to this day.
ETA: What color are your cabinets? What color granite are you thinking about getting? I forgot to mention they give out free samples (they literally knock a chunk off of their warehouse slab if you are interested in the color - it's cool!) Good luck with your search!

I've never used this company personally, but we always used to refer people there when I was working. Probably won't be the most affordable of all the recommendations, but they're worth looking into just to see the showroom.
Thanks, this is one of the places I did find through Google. Our cabinets are light maple but eventually I want white. We were thinking of just redoing the countertops for now and living with the maple until maybe next summer. It is kind of up in the air for right now.
