My nephew was taken back to the hospital today. He had been doing well and then suddenly today he started vomiting and couldn't keep his eyes open. Very frightening.
Turns out he has post-operative encephalitis....a swelling of the ventricles that happens when the brain/spinal cord can't clear the spinal fluid (which is usually gunked up) after surgery. Fairly common, I guess. He is going into surgery tonight to get another temporary drain, then they'll monitor him over the weekend to see if his body kicks in drainage-wise. Usually it only happens once, they say. Best case scenario, he's home on Monday. Worst case scenario, late next week.
(sorry if the formatting of that paragraph is odd - I C&P'd it from my sister's FB update)
So, since those vibes seemed to work so well before, if you wouldn't mind sending a few more his way, I'd really appreciate it! Plus my sister will be home alone with her three younger ones all weekend - so vibes her way too!
Thanks!
Re: More thoughts/vibes requested
Thanks, Ladies!
He had the additional surgery last night - to put in a new drain. It seems to be working, but his doctor wants to keep him in the hospital probably until mid-week next week.
So everything seems to be OK, considering what a scare they had. I think my poor sister is a bit frazzled though because 1) the doctor failed to warn them that this might happen and 2) her husband has no more time off from work. Between the time he took off when my neice was born last fall and the week he just took off for the main brain surgery, he doesn't have any more time available (he's a teacher).
Normally my father would help out in a pinch, but he caught a cold from my sister's little girl and as such, can't be in the hospital with my nephew. My sister's in-laws are around but there are "issues" there and my sister would rather they not be involved (creates more stress than it is worth) - so they are scrambling to figure out how to handle things. I feel awful - I wish I could go and help, but I simply cannot take the time off work.
I was crying on my way into work because I feel so bad for her and can't do anything about it . . . Life just hasn't been fair to my sister. She juggles everything the world throws at her so amazingly well, but when I talk to her, I can hear the sheer exhaustion, frustration and sadness in her voice. It is absolutely heartbreaking.
