I don't really know what board this is even appropriate on, so I decided to try you ladies!! They think I may have an ulcer, so my doctor ordered an upper GI exam and small bowel follow-through. I know it basically consists of drinking something and then an x-ray. I have a horrendous gag reflex and am terrified of drinking this stuff...has anyone done it and can give me advice/calm my irrational fears? Also, if anyone has done this/knows someone who has done it how long does it take? It sounds like it could take 2+ hours....thanks!!

Re: random medical question
DH had the upper GI done last year at Mt. Nittany. I don't remember what he said about the stuff other than it's really thick and they expect you not to burp during the exam. It did take about 2 hours, including recovery time.
Good luck, I hope everything turns out OK
i just saw this. i have had my fair share of each of these (10+). if youre having the small bowel follow through, it could take up to four hours. its all dependent upon how quickly or slowly your body processes the barium.
i know there were three different things i drank, but i cant remember which was for what. one was really thin barium and they actually put a little chocolate syrup in it and it wasnt so bad. then there was a really thick barium one, but thats only like a half of a styrofoam cup so its not a huge amount, and they give you a little time between sips. the third thing i had was something that was fizzy with alkaseltzer-like tablets. you had to take a huge gulp of it and not burp.
to be perfectly honest with you, none of it is so awful that i had a terrible experience. i will tell you that afterwards, for days, its very difficult to have a bowel movement. so you should try to drink as many fluids as you can to get it to pass quickly.
on the up side, if youre feeling really yucky and terrible, and this test is going to answer some questions and get you on the road to feeling better...its worth it.
in the realm of stomach tests, this isnt the worst. i had to eat radioactive eggs once
Thanks!!! I actually had it done yesterday and while it wasn't my favorite thing ever it wasn't that bad. I did the small bowel and everything and it was quick (they finished the small bowel portion in under an hour!!). That being said, they told me the quicker I drinked the barium the sooner I would be done, so I chugged it...haha
I won't have the results until Monday probably, but I'm hoping to have some answers otherwise the scope is next!
