How to figure out how many calories I burned?
I am doing a Zumba class (sort of) for an hour. How would I estimate how many calories I burned? I am starting to crack down on my weight gain and am tracking calories in and out on My Fitness Pal (which I absolutely love). So, I have to create a new exercise for Zumba. Is there a website you like that would estimate this?

GRKaters is correct in that the only way to get a truly accurate estimate is by use f a heart rate monitor. But those cost money (I don't know what the cheapest accurate one is though).
If you want to go the cheaper route just try searching "calories burned Zumba" or something similar and see the answers and go with something in the middle. I would actually tend to estimate low just in case. It's not as perfect as a heart rate monitor, but people were able to track and lose weight before all these new fandangled technologies too. :-)
Does My Fitness Pal list other exercises? Do they have estimates for dancing? I think I would use those estimates and tweak until you get the heart rate monitor.
Yes! MFP doesn't have it on their site when I search it! I am probably going to use 300 calories. I am usually pretty out of breath/red faced when I do it (for an hour) so I think that is EXTREMELY conservative because I don't get that level of intensity on the elipitcal machine for 40 minutes and burn 300 calories (per the machine). Zumba will be for an hour. Yes, a heart rate monitor is probably a more accurate way to figure this out so if I stick to what I'm trying to do and am still not losing weight, I might just buy one to try to figure out where the issue is. I literally had to eat 3/4 of my lean cuisine pizza today because of the calories in it. I just thought Lean Cusine = low calories. Not so much. I am probably going to start eating more salads for lunch because that seemed to work out really well. I can't even THINK about eating any sweets. There is just no room for it in my daily allowance. I had to pass up virtually all of our admin week treats since it was all sweets! Sorry, I'm babbling. Off topic. should stop.
3/4 of a lean cuisine pizza is not cool.
Are you strength training at all?

1,200 calories per day. I just wanted to make sure there was enough calories left for dinner and snacks in between. Do you think that is reasonable?
Nope.
1200 is basic survival level--like, if you lay in bed all day doing nothing. Come on over to the H&F board; there is a ton of wisdom there that I won't pretend to own myself.
But I do know that 1200 is way too low **especially** if you are working out. Your body will not let go of anything on that low of a plan because it thinks you aren't giving it enough as is. That's not enough to live on, let alone exercise on and still feel good. 1500-1800 is much more reasonable, IMO. Again, the ladies on H&F would be helpful here.

That is what MFP suggested so I just went with it! They called it "conservative" or something so I just assumed it was OK! When I set it up, I said I was sedentary (sat at a desk all day long)! I seriously just set this thing up spur of the moment without a thought because I just wanted to check it out. I was INSTANTLY addicted to it.
I've only ever used SparkPeople; it gives notoriously low calorie estimates.
First figure out what you need to consume just to survive--your basal (?) metabolic rate, I think? BMR. There are calculators online that take into account your stats and activity level to help give you a number. H&Fers are better at explaining this.
To lose 1lb, you need to burn 3500 calories. A loss of 1-2lb per week is safe and maintainable. So, cut or burn 500 calories a day. But only after you figure out what safe and realistic number of calories you should be eating in the first place. Eating 1200 and burning 300 in an hour of Zumba = not smart, and not realistic.
