Anyone live in Frederick?

DH and I have been house hunting for a few months and are currently looking at a home in Frederick. It is near Ft. Detrick and the community college. One of DH's co-workers live in the community and said they love it there. Our biggest concern is the schools since DD and DS will be going to school in a few years. It's zoned for Whittier Elementary. Any info about the schools and/or area would be very helpful. TIA!

Ashley

Re: Anyone live in Frederick?

  • Whittier Elementary is one of the schools DH teaches at (he in an instrumental music teacher).  I'll ask him about the school when he gets home.

DH grew up in Frederick, and his parents still live near Ft Detrick.  One thing they always talk about is how all their pets have died of cancer, and things along those lines--there's always rumors about what may or may not leak/float/escape from the testing facilities, especially via water.  I have no idea if there's any validity to it though.

  • From what I understand Whittier has a bunch of discipline problems.  I grew up in Cloverhill 3.  The elementary school for that neighborhood is Yellow Springs which from my understanding is a much better school.

Plus Whittier kids go to Frederick High... that's the major "city" school.  I went to TJ which was a little more suburban.  I may be partial, but I can't speak more highly of Cloverhill :)

Hmm, Im not sure where Cloverhill is. This neighborhood is Old Farm. Where is Cloverhill in comparison? And it says the high school its zoned for is Gov. Thomas Johnson.

  • I've taught for the county for several years now, and while I'm not willing to post things like personal opinions on the various schools on here (and it's nothing against Whittier; I wouldn't post my opinions on any of the schools), I'd be happy to talk to you about the program, schools, etc., via email (thepastorswife07 at gmail dot com).

Also, have you checked out greatschools.org?  You can input a zip code and search for all the schools within (x) miles from that zip code, then read reviews from parents.
