What do you recommend/prefer and why?  Going back and forth between video and audio only.

Re: Moms: monitor ?

  • I recommend your ears :o)

We never used a monitor, but I know a lot of mom's swear by their video monitors.

We tried the audio monitor but I felt like I was laying awake just waiting for a cry and to be honest we could hear Davis crying no matter where we were so we felt it wasn't necessary and returned it.

Here is one a lot of the mom's in my group like:

  • We have a Sony Baby Call. I really only ever use the monitor if I'm outside and the kids are in bed, I can hear the kids crying inside the house and we live in a 2 story home.
  • We never used on either.
  • We only have sound and mostly we don't even have them on.  Our kids are upstairs and we can hear them all the way in our 1st floor bedroom if they cry with out the monitor on.

We use ours everyday.  It was a pretty cheap from from BRU and has 2 receivers, which comes in so handy.  We leave one in our bedroom and then we have one in the family room that we move to the kitchen if needed.  You can also put a battery in them so we have taken one outside as well.  If we didn't have it, we would be able to hear A if we were in the kitchen or family room.  We can barely hear her in our bedroom without it because we have a fan on all the time (thanks to me)

  • We only have audio and almost never use it. If I hop in the shower while she's napping then I turn it on, otherwise we can hear her... we just sleep with the bedroom doors open.

  • We will be buying another one but only because the one we have doesnt transmit sound anymore but I can see the lights on it flickering when Monk is awake...and we only use it if I am downstairs and he is upstairs in the crib sleeping. Eventually we will be needing one for his room downstairs when we are upstairs, but he will not be moved down to his room by himself for some time. Until then we will not have the need for a monitor.

  • I am surprised the amount of mom's here that don't use one, I figured I'd be the only one.   It is funny how the things you truly believe you need pre-baby end up being such a waste.

Whatever you end up deciding Brandy, just make sure you save receipts and packaging so you can take it back if you decide it isn't something you really need.  I ended up taking quite a bit back to BRU after realizing something was not useful to us at all.  Or you buy something that you think is going to be the best and it isn't so you need to take it back for something that works for you and your baby.

  • We have a video monitor.  We didn't have to buy it though, it was a shower gift my my two sil's who both had one as well.  The real reason I like it (although with Sloane being almost 2, the only people who uses it is Nana when she is babysitting), is when we are outside.  Now that spring/summer are here, we spend a lot more time outside mowing, washing cars, or just sitting outside reading during nap.  It just adds a layer of comfort being outside.  It's also great for when you shower when they are little.  Sometimes they decide to cut nap short and it usually is when you are busy.............Plus, to be honest, I just liked being able to "check on her" without opening her door, etc. and risk waking her up.
  • We have the Summer Handheld Video monitor and I LOVE LOVE it. It is the only baby item I would need! IMO its a must have. We use it for Carly even now and she is almost 2. Especially now that she is at the stage of being daring and trying to climb out of her crib, I love to be able to actually see her. Ours actually broke about 2 months ago and we bought another bc I can't live with out it. lol. And honestly I am not sure when I will stop using it. lol.

  • Speaking from just babysitting experience and watching friends' kiddos, I loved having video monitors.  It was just so much more reassuing when I could SEE them.  I'm almost 100% certain that's what we will be getting.

  • I love my video monitor! I have this one. i wasn't sure I wanted a monitor until we moved into this house. i love that I can just flip on the camera and check to see him when he makes a noise or is starting to whine a little. I know that if I would have to go in there, I would wake him up a lot more just checking on him instead of just checking the monitor. Ours gets a little static here and there, but for the most part it works really well. I don't think I will ever get just an audio monitor.

  • For J we only had an audio one, but since Emma was in the NICU and had some breathing trouble we upgraded and got a video one so I could actually see what she was doing.  I LOVE the video monitor...we are thinking about buying another camera for J's room even though he's 4 because we never know what he's doing in there when the door is shut.

  • On more thing on video that is a plus.....we have the summer infant one.  You can turn down the volume but the noise bar will still move across under the screen so you can still tell if they are making noise and turn on the screen to double check. That was also nice.
