Relocating!

Hi Ladies,

I posted a few months ago because the DH and I were moving to Oklahoma. I received a lot of great suggestions about where to live (thank you!) and we closed on our house Friday! We'll be living in north Norman just off Tecumseh (is that right?). My husband has a job with OU's ROTC detachment (he's in the air force) and I'm still looking :(

Anyhow, seeing as I got so much great advice last time I was wondering if you all could help me out again! I'm looking for recommendations for day-to-day type things: where's the best place to buy groceries? where's the best restaurants? does anyone know of a good vet, boarder, or dog groomer? what's the best hair salon? etc...

Finally, is there a group that gets together on these boards? The DH and I don't know a soul in Oklahoma and we're looking for some couples to hang out with. He's a military brat so he used to this type of thing but for me, the thought of leaving everyone behind and starting over terrifies me! :)

Thanks is advance!

Re: Relocating!

  • Welcome! I am also a north Norman(er?). We has been living here since the end of 07 and have loved it. I usually buy my groceries from Target. But had also shopped at Homeland on occasion. There is a dog park off of 12th ave up the road from you that we have taken our dog to a couple of times. I really like it during the summer because most of the students are gone so the town isn't as crowded and it's easier to get around.
We do have a monthly GTG for this board. You will just need to PM DannyAllison (she's sends out the evites) so you can be added to the list. Hopefully we will be able to meet you. We have a great group of ladies on here! Welcome again!!

  • Congrats on the house! When are you moving in?

I live in NW OKC, but I went to OU in Norman so I'll try to give you some recommendations.

For supermarkets, I prefer Crest over Homeland. I think there's one in SW Moore, not too far from where you. Other than that, most of your grocery selection will be limited to SuperTarget/SuperWalmart/Walmart Neighborhood Markets. We do have a few local stores in the metro area (Crescent Market, Forward Foods, Native Roots in downtown Norman), but I haven't been to any of them yet.You can't buy wine and liquor in grocery stores in OK, but the Cellar on Main St in Norman has a huge selection.

For pizza in Norman, try the Hideaway on Campus Corner.  Yummy. :>) If you like beer (I don't personally, but their food is still good), try Coach's, BJ's Brewhouse, or McNellie's. The best Mexican food I've found so far in the metro area is Abel's Mexican on NW 50th and MacArthur in OKC.

I love my vet and dog boarder, but they're a 40 min drive from Norman so I doubt you'll want to use them! I have heard good things about Camp BowWow in the Norman/Moore area. We go to the large dog park near Lake Hefner in N OKC - they have a great pond if your dog(s) like to swim or go wading.

  • I'm just south of Norman, so Norman is where we do most all of our shopping, eating out, etc.  I've only lived here ~2 years, so I'm sure the others may have better recs, but I do our grocery shopping at WalMart and Super Target.  We have a mall and lots of department and book stores near it, and there are more department stores off Robinson--Target, Academy, Kohl's, etc.  Lots of restaurants off of the interstate too.  I think it's a lot anyway, but I moved here from a town that only had a Sonic and a gas station Smile

Moore isn't far away either, and there's more restaurants and shopping there, as well as a great movie theater.  The vet we use is by our house so there's probably one in Norman closer to you.

Hope your move goes well, welcome to the area!!
  • Welcome to the Sooner State! :)

I currently live in north OKC, but lived in Norman for about five years, so I know it pretty well.

I'd agree with PPs about groceries: Super Target is probably your best bet. For restaurants, my favorite restaurant in all of Edmond/OKC/Norman is Tarahumara's on Porter in Norman. It's Mexican food, and effing fantastic, imo. Also, I'm pretty sure there's still one or two Rusty's Frozen Custard locations in Norman, which I was always a huge fan of.

Unfortunately, I'm not a big help on vets/groomers; I never had pets when I lived in Normpton.

Erin Zook at Behind the Scene is really great for hair. She used to work at Ulta, and I went to her for several years. Since moving to OKC I haven't been willing to drive to Norman for my hair, but it's tempting. You should give her a call.

Hope those suggestions are helpful. I am new to the board here as well, and haven't had any luck yet with meet ups yet. The stereotype about Oklahomans being friendly is (mostly) true, so you probably won't have too much trouble making friends. :) Good luck with the move!

Yes to this!  Tarahumara's is sooo good!  And there's Rusty's on Main Street in the Hasting's parking lot.  If you like to rent movies/buy books, Hasting's will be your friend.

. Tarahumaras is one of our favorites! I didnt add it in my first post but we use Rose Rock Vet off of 24th Ave close to Main St. We have really liked them and haven't had any complaints. We've also used them for boarding a handful of times and they have taken care of our dog really well.

    Love Tarahumara's!!!!
  • Welcome!  I'm in Norman also!

We usually go to Crest in OKC to do most of our grocery shopping.  But if we need something quick we will go to Walmart or Super Target.  We use Boyer Vet Clinic which is also in south OKC.  It's a father and son vet and they have been wonderful to us and our pooches.  Especially when we have had emergency situations.

I'm sending you a PM also!

  • What kind of work are you looking for?
  • We live in Northwest Norman too!

We always shop at Homeland which is on the corner of Robinson and 24th.  I like to cut coupons and they double coupons PLUS they are a huge Thunder sponsor so...that's why I shop there!

As far as doggie stuff - we wash our dog at the car wash on Robinson and 36th.  But as far as actual grooming..I am not sure.  There is a nice doggie park on the east side of town...Robinson and 12th, I think.  Also, campus is a great place to walk your doggie.

Restaurants.....our favorites are Service Station, Victoria's (we love anything on campus corner), Gaberino's (over by Borders), Legends, Patsy's, McAlesters (chain).....gosh, I think we mostly eat in the city when we eat out.

As far as a job...not sure what you are qualified for...I have several friends that are recruiters so if you are interested in going that route, let me know.

Oh, wow. I *love* the Service Station! Their burger and fries is pretty phenomenal. Haven't thought about that place in years. I may have to make a pilgrimage soon!
