What to do and where to stay in Duluth?
DH and I are going to Duluth for our anniversary in May. Any suggestions on what we should do while we are there and where we should stay? I'm sure we'll go out to dinner so any good restaurant recommendations? It's been a long, long time since either of us have been there. I'm really hoping for nice weather but am not holding my breath.

Re: What to do and where to stay in Duluth?
I LOVED the Glensheen Mansion!! We went on the tour and then explored the grounds for awhile. If you're in to stuff like that you'll love it. You can make tour reservations online. http://www.d.umn.edu/glen/visit/tours.html
We had the BEST dinner at the New Scenic Cafe. It's a little ways out of town but the food was super good. It was a small cozy place and we had a really great time there. http://www.sceniccafe.com/
When in Duluth you must walk the boardwalk and explore Canal Park. It's a must. :-)
For a more casual dining experience you could go to the Brew House at Fitgers. We had reallllllly good burgers and beer there (well, DH had beer and I had hard cider!) :-) http://brewhouse.net/
We stayed at the Beacon Pointe Lodge. It was actually really nice -BUT- we could hear EVERYTHING our neighbors were doing. If you can get a really good deal there it *might* be worth it but there are plenty of other places to stay. There are OODLES of cute B&Bs in Duluth. I would check tripadvisor.com for recs!
HAVE FUN!! :-)
I love the Scenic Cafe. We have to stop there whenever we're near Duluth.
At Sarah's Table/Chester Creek Cafe is good, too. We tried Duluth Grill and it's good if you like greasy diner food. It was on Diners, Dives and Drive-ins. Also Va Bene is good for Italian.
We usually end up heading up the North Shore to do some hiking. Split Rock and Gooseberry Falls aren't too far away. Enger Tower is cool to see once - you get a great view of Duluth from the top.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
It's currently under construction, so this will probably not be an option this time!

The Best Western Edgewater has a water park. Otherwise, there are quite a few hotels down in Canal Park, which would put you close to lots of activities, shops, restaurants and the Lakewalk.
It's been a few years since I've been up there, so not sure if all these places are still around, but good places to eat: Little Angies, Fitger's Brewhouse, Blackwoods, Portland Malt Shoppe (for ice cream treats!), Sir Benedicts Pub (great sandwiches)
There is a train that follows the Lakewalk and I'm completely blanking on the name, but that might be something the LOs would enjoy. There is also an Aquarium near Canal Park - but I have not been there myself.
Since you live there can you give me your suggestions too?
The kids will be back at home with grandma and grandpa.

my inlaws love Canal Park Lodge. They stay there a lot when they go up to visit DH's grandparents.
Ditto on Glensheen. Especially now that the attic is open for tours
I also love Gooseberry.
If you go up to Gooseberry, stop at the Rustic Inn for food. it's FANTASTIC. DH's childhood BFF is the chef, and the pies seriously rival Betty's (now that Betty sold it).
Nice! I hope the weather is nice while you are here...you never know up here!
Everyone has already made great suggestions. I love At Sara's Table and Va Bene....probably my 2 favorite places to eat in town. I haven't been there yet, but if you want Mexican, Mexico Lindo (in the Fitger's building) is supposedly the place to go. I personally like Hacienda del Sol, and it is never as busy as Mexico Lindo!
I think Glensheen is awesome. The aquarium sucks, so don't bother...it's not worth the money. If it's nice definitely take a walk on the lake walk. We really like to just walk around in Canal Park too, there are some shops you can go in, and it's really fun to see all the people out and about when it's nice out. Something about being outside by the lake with the sun out is so refreshing.
As for places to stay, we've only stayed at the Sheraton, and we LOVED it! It's not in Canal Park, but you can get rooms with a lake view. I think it's a little pricier, but you if you can get a good deal, I would go for it!
Randy and I got engaged at Gooseberry Falls, so I love it there, and it has great trails and views of the falls. If you do go up the North Shore though, try and find Palisade Head, it is kind of hidden and it has great views of the lake and Split Rock Lighthouse. It is in Tettegouche State Park about 10 miles north of Split Rock.
That's all I can think of now! Hope you have lots of fun!

Oh man, that would be awesome! We were there last October for our anniversary and it wasn't open then. :-(
The attic tour is pretty cool, but it made me a little sad too. They have so many cool things up there that seem as though they should be on display instead of stacked in piles in an old attic, such as National Geographic magazines all the way back to the first issue, etc.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Inn on Lake Superior in canal park. As others have mentioned At Sara's Table is fantastic, especially for breakfast. We also thought the aquarium was pretty neat when we went.
