checking in

Hi girls.

I just wanted to check in and let you know that I am safe, as is the rest of my family. It's been a wild past few days. First off, let me thank you so much for all of  the thoughts and concerns. We are very lucky to have made it through all of this.

Rusty had just gotten home from work on Wednesday night at 5:30 when the power went out. I had been at clinicals all morning and was sent home when the school shut down. I made it home before the storms rolled in. The tornado sirens had been going off non-stop all day until the power went out. It was eerily calm outside. We were hunkered down in the hallway with the dogs waiting for the worst. It remained calm and very quiet for some time. We looked outside about the time huge black clouds rolled over and the winds pickd up. The wind was the worst part...the trees seemed to bend almost to the ground. There were a couple clouds that looked very shady...as in they looked as if they could be funnel clouds. Luckily we did not get a single tornado in our vicinity. We went to bed early that night, but hardly slept due to the storms.

The next morning when we woke up, there was still no power. Rusty went out and bought whatever could be cooked/heated on the grill and any non-perishables that he could find. All stores were already sold out of ice and batteries. He said that the line to the grocery store he went to was wrapped around the building and that they were only allowing five people into the store at a time. It was chaotic. He came home and we ate while sitting in my car listening to the radio. The damage was so extensive...ten miles down the road there were houses that were leveled while the house right next door was only missing shingles. Weather is a crazy thing. It is amazing. We went to friends' houses to check up and thankfully everyone was okay. We had no cell service and when we did, our phones would die out due to it searching for service.

By day two of no power, we were able to borrow a radio and had gotten adequate cell coverage. We were able to charge our phones in a friends' car that had a 110V inverter built in. I recieved a newspaper at some point during this mess and for the first time saw photos of the damage. It's heart breaking. On the road that my grandmother lives on, there were over 70 homes destroyed...and that's just on one road. These tornados hit soo many counties in our state. I'm heartbroken for the families affected. People were calling into the radio stations (which have not played a single song in four days because they have been dedicating their time to storm coverage and resource questions) and asking when their power would be restored...it is soo angering to think that so many people are pissed because of that when there are hundreds of familes displaced from their families and homes. The death toll is into the three hundreds with over four hundred more unaccounted for.

I could keep going you guys but words do not express the grief, fear, and stress that our state has been going through. Aside from a couple, it amazes me how our state has banded together to help locate the missing and try to restore what has been lost. FIMA is here and will remain here helping those with significant losses get back on their feet. Power is slowy being restored...mine came back on a couple hours ago with no guarantee that it will stay on.

Please please please continue to pray for those affected by these storms. Like I said, words can not describe any of it.

I just wanted to let you know what was going on. Thank you guys soo much for everything. You all are amazing women and I love each of you. Take the time tonight to kiss your husband and your children and thank God for all that you have. I have truly been humbled by this. Take care. God Bless.

This is what totally freaks me about tornados.

It's just freaking amazing (not in a good way obviously) how a tornado can "get" one house and not the house next door - just unreal. Looking at the pictures on the news, I just don't know what I would do if everything was just in pieces and gone.
