Moving to Baltimore

Hey everyone. My husband and I [and our bulldog] will be moving to Baltimore in August. We are planning on renting for a year and eventually buying. As we are both pretty new to the area I was hoping anyone could offer up some advice on neighborhoods. I know Baltimore has SO many neighborhoods and that some of them can be a little dicey...I've heard good things about the Federal Hill area, as well as Fell's Point and Canton.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Re: Moving to Baltimore

  • I live in the Federal Hill area, and I have been here for 12 years. If you have specific questions about the neighborhood please feel free to ask, here or via pm.

  • Well I will be attending The University of Maryland-Baltimore and my husband is currently looking for jobs in both Baltimore and the DC area. Ideally I would like to be near school, but I am open to different areas if the price/house/neighborhood etc is right. My main concern and reason for posting is that I have heard some neighborhoods are just really bad and I would like to avoid those if at all possible.

As for Federal Hill, we are looking to rent for our first year, are there many rental homes [townhomes, single family homes etc] available in that area? Is it really expensive to live there? We are both 25, how is it for younger couples to live there? We have a dog, is there available green space, or do many of the homes have yards, available for pets?

    Thanks everyone for advice.

  • I suggest coming down for a weekend to visit the neighborhoods. I've lived in Baltimore City for 2 year while going to UMB. I recently moved to Glen Burnie since my husband commutes to Annapolis and I drive to Baltimore.

Many people like the areas you mentioned but their complaints are the parking and limited yard space. This is really common all over Baltimore not just those areas. I do know of a dog park in Federal Hill if you want your dog to get exercise off the leash.

I suggest not limiting yourself to just the Baltimore City area. Check out Catonsville, Pikesville, Towson (this may be far to communte to D.C.) Glen Burnie (some parts), Elkridge (can be slightly boring), Laurel (closer to DC about 20-30min to Baltimore)

    Good luck!
