Osama Bin Laden Dead!

We're still waiting on the urgent unexpected statement from President Obama but they're saying they have confirmation that he is dead & the US has the body!

Re: Osama Bin Laden Dead!

  • Crazy news! I'm waiting on the speech now.
  • Nothing is more powerful than watching the crowd outside The White House sing The Star Spangled Banner after hearing this news!

  • I heard the new last night, but couldnt stay awake for the presidents statement.  This is great news!  Though it has to make you wonder what kind of retaliation we might be facing.

With where I work, I worry about this daily, even more so now.  And I wonder who the next in line is, and how horrible of a person he is.

Watching the coverage at the White House was pretty cool too!  It's nice to see people unite.  And Obama gave a good speech too

I'm glad he was finally found, but it is a little weird that they dumped his body in the water so soon after killing him.

I find this very odd too, why did they dump his body so hastily?

I think it is fantastic news on one hand, but on the other it makes me wonder how much of a difference it will really make. I think his death is more of a symbolic victory for us, my thought is that their organization is well structured and they'll do just as well without him. I too had that initial reaction of YAY! but then my next thought was, is this going to add some fuel to their fire and spark a retaliation?

Wow, I feel like a big Debbie Downer about this!

This - I'm concerned about retaliation and who is next in line...

  • I'm glad that bin Laden is dead, but honestly, I doubt it will make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.  He's been in hiding for so long that I doubt he has been controlling much over the past 10 years, and al-Qaida seems to be getting a long fine without him.  :(

I agree that it is likely a more symbolic victory than anything else. Some justice.  But who knows who was waiting in the wings and what their retaliation might be. Scary thought.

My sister and I are going to NYC next week. It will be interesting to see what kind of security increases there may be at the airport and places like the Statue of Liberty.

I'm sure it'll be pretty tight security - I know the embassy worldwide are on alert right now too.

They are saying his body was handled obeying all Muslim traditions and customs, including a burial at sea within one day of death.

As much as I hate the man - I am proud that the military followed the tradition - even if he didn't deserve it in our eyes.

Yes That's the type of thing that sets us apart from them.

  • I remember how upsetting the images of people celebrating the 9/11 attacks in the middle east were to me at the time. Although I am happy that he has been brought to justice, I can't help but wonder how those same people are feeling about seeing our celebrations last night. I don't think that celebrating the death of ANYONE is a kind thing to do, and doesn't really give American's a good face to the rest of the world.

I think while the two celebrations are different watching it definitely made me a little uneasy

I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing the Team America them song on 97.1 this morning though.

Yes, they are different celebrations...but would those people who already hate us see the difference? I fear they wouldn't.

I don't think so either, that's why I felt uneasy.

I lurked a bit on international nesties, fairly interesting.

I didn't even know that board existed. Very interesting to read their thoughts on the whole thing. Thanks for the tip!

  • Yes, he was technically in hiding for a while, but he was their leader that all of Al Queda pledeged their allegiance to.  He was their leader, figure head, whatever you want to call it and still acting as a puppeter.  He was in caves when he organized 9/11, so just because he was in hiding, doesn't mean plans were still not being put in place and executed on, with direction from him.

It may be a blow to the morale more than an operations stand point and Al Queda will unfortunately never go away.  Kind of like Hitler and Nazis.  Nazis still exist today, but are definitely not as strong as they were under their leader.

I just hope that this will mean some of our troops can come home soon.

This! I have a cousin set to be deployed to Afghanistan (2nd tour there) this August, he is not so optimistic. Sad

The job isn't over - one mission has been completed on a laundry list of a lot more "to dos".
