what spf # to you use on LO

Just wondering what # everyone is using. The doc said nothing over 45...just reapply. But at the store it was really hard to find anything below 50 for kids.

I generally use SPF 50 on my kids, and reapply every couple hours.

    EDIT: http://www.melanomafoundation.org/prevention/facts.htm

Everyone should use a sunscreen with minimum SPF30.

  • I think the stuff I have right now is 50 and 55. And I still reapply all the time.

  • I am curious why nothing over 45?....I saw some Waterbabies before that was 100spf.

  • the nothing over 45 thing is just b/c people think when it's high they don't have to reapply, so doctors caution parents to use a lower one and reapply so they don't put too much faith in that high spf.

The other reality is that 30spf blocks 97% of harmful rays; 60 spf blocks 98%. So it doesn't really do much more either.

    It's all about reapplying.

  • oh.......so much to learn.....although I would think it would be common sense for me to re-apply regardless of what the spf is.....

I once heard that the number of spf equals the number in minutes of duration before you should re-apply. Anyone ever heard that? I'm not talking babies, just in general.

  • I think it is 50spf.

I had heard that years ago too, but I believe that the advice about that has changed. Sunscreen should be reapply often, regardless of the #. And, even "waterproof" sunscreen isn't 100% waterproof. It still needs to be reapplied regularly.
