Who is up and watching this?????

I was there on 9/11. I lived 2 blocks away. I worked 6 blocks away. I ran for my life. I watched people jump and fall to their deaths. I ran from collapsing buildings. I was "displaced" for 2 weeks.

ROT IN HELL YOU MOTHER F*CKER.

I know there are plenty of people to take over al qaeda. I realize that. But for one day, for one night, I feel some incredible sense of celebration. Not really closure, but almost. I've never, never been happy about a death before. But this one - I'm ready to throw a f*cking party.

Enjoy your virgins, a$$hole.

I'm up. I turned on the TV after seeing a flood of messages on FB. (Yes, I get my breaking news from FB statuses!)

I remember calling and emailing my cousin frantically trying to locate her on 9/11. She fortunately was out of state then, but it was a scary couple of days not being able to track her down.

  • i saw it this morning. i usually stay up until 10, but was so tired so i went to bed but could not sleep! i cant beleive i missed it.

anyway, i am happy for the people who lost someone in 9/11- i hope that it brings them some comfort. on the other hand, i dont think it changes much and i am frightened by this news.

  • I, like Erica, am normally up at 10, so I can't I believe too went to bed early and missed this.  I feel a weird sense of relief.  I know someone will replace him - in fact, I know that he had already been replaced in the day-to-day stuff, but geez, what HUGE boost for our military and our general morale.
  • I am not sticking my head in the sand, I know that there are plenty more of his followers, and others who think like him, and I know that we must remain vigilant. But we always should.

It is a weird feeling today - I feel closure on some levels, I feel exuberant on some levels... it's a "ding dong the witch is dead" feeling. I feel sad. I feel honored to have had so many brave men and women fight for our freedom these past 10 years and beyond. I grieve again for those lost on 9/11 and in other terrorist attacks. I'm anxious about reprisals but at the same time, should we just always let the bad guy go free just because capturing or killing him will piss people off?

Wish I could make it into the city today. I had planned on it just to be near the WTC and remember, but work and my non-sleeping toddler have other plans for me I guess.

My FB News Feed has been little but status updates related to this, as I'm sure most people are seeing. Here are two of the explosion of statuses since late last night:

One of my friends wrote, "Ding dong, the D!ick is dead" on her FB status.

But, my favorite is from my cousin, "We caught bin laden! Best. Played. Game. Of. Hide. And. Seek. EVER."

    I love that last status!

  • we were streaming netflix and went to bed early last night so didn't find out until this morning. i wish i was in new york today for sure, i was there on 9/11 and i'd like to be with my fellow new yorkers right now. i honestly do not feel happy or celebratory about this. is it a relief and some level of closure, absolutely. does bin laden's death erase anything that happened on 9-11-01 or the lives of our service men & women that have been lost since? no. i will say that come the 10th anniversary this september, it will be of comfort to know that bin laden is gone.

i actually find that status disturbing. equating this to a childhood game makes feel sick.

  • no worries, alicia. having been just ten blocks from WTC that day gives me a very specific perspective on all of this. i am relieved they aren't showing tons of 9-11 footage. i would be boycotting tv for at least a week!

Cheeky, that's like me with the Beltway Sniper Attacks. My sharing that FB status was insensitive of me for those who were more personally touched by the attacks on 9-11. Again, I am sorry to have upset you.

  • thanks girls :) it's really ok. i just have very mixed feelings about all this.
