Maybe I'm insensitive... re: bin Laden

I believe it's great bin Laden is dead, he's a horrible piece of crap. Mission accomplished.

However, I don't get the all night parades and crap going on at so many colleges. I think people at Ground Zero reflecting where murders happened is one thing, but the photos of parades in the streets is bizarre to me.

Yes, what bin Laden did was horrible and the US is the victim, but this is the kind of thing that makes America seem like arrogant jerks. And it will add fuel to the radical's fires. Remember how painful it was after 9/11 when we saw Islamic countires cheering and burning our flag? I just don't think it's smart for them to see our country cheering in the streets. Clearly bin Laden isn't the ONLY person in al Qaeda making big decisions. There are successors, the war isn't "won" persay...

Kudos to the armed forces who got in there and took care of the job, and it's okay to be happy and say "Go America" to yourself, but parties in the streets, fireworks, etc. just seems like an open invitation for retaliation, and that scares me.

  • You're not alone. I thought that exact thing when I heard the news.

Of course, DH got a call that the threat level was going up yesterday morning, and nobody knew why. Once we figured out why, we both immediately started thinking backup plans and such, just in case there's retaliation.

  • I have mixed feelings about this. I don't think the celebrating done after 9/11 where thousands of innocent people were murdered is quite as offensive as celebrating the death of the man who orchestrated the murders of innocent people. However, I completely understand that the extremists will have a different view on this and I do fear retaliation.

I'm happy about his death but I'm not out dancing in the streets.

  • Another thing: I keep seeing the word squicky being used to describe the way they feel over the celebrations. That is a stupid made up word and I hate it.

  • I've never heard of that 'word'...what does it even mean?

They use it to describe feeling uncomfortable, it is making me irrationally angry.

  • wtf? Just say uncomfortable.

I'm a total commie hippy, so I really can't feel HAPPY that someone is dead, no matter what they've done. I'm glad that the armed forces can have something tangible, a real success in a war that will likely never end.

...and there's a part of me that is annoyed that TSA will probably be a BIGGER pain in my butt when I have to fly soon.

I agree. Squicky makes you sound like a little girl, and this is a very adult issue. Don't feel squicky about a terrorist's death and the fact that it makes some people happy.

Well, like pp mentioned, the partying in the streets of the middle east after terrorists struck 2 stationary buildings of innocents is not really analagous to partying in the streets after THE terror mastermind of the last decade was taken out. It does seem a little strange though, since it isn't really going to personally benefit those people, except for the West Point grads and others like that that would actually be out there in the fight.

Retaliation will happen regardless of how people act about it. Yes, there is something macabre, inappropriate, and offensive about celebrating anyone's death, but if there's a death to celebrate, I imagine that would be it.

  • I agree...I don't feel HAPPY that he's dead either...I was actually thinking about this on the way to work this morning.

I don't think anybody has the right to just pop another person...however even if we locked him up you know the bad guys would be sneaking messages in and out...so i'm just glad other people are making these decisions...
