Sunscreen allergies?

C will be two next week.  I think he has an allergy to sunscreen.  I first noticed it last year, if it got in his eye or was on his hand and he rubbed his eye, his face would break out in big red splotches.  I tried 3 different types of sunscreen and never really found anything that would work.  I was hoping he would grow out of it, then this weekend we went to the zoo and I put sunscreen on him and his face completely broke out in red bumps and all down the back of his neck where I put it (even though none of it got in his eyes).  I know it was itchy because he kept trying to scratch at it all the next day.  It's weird because he only breaks out on his face/neck, he never breaks out on his arms or legs and I've tried 3-4 different brands of sunscreen with the same outcome.

Have any of you ladies encountered this?  Have you been able to find a sunscreen brand that will work?  Does spray v. stick application, v. cream make a difference?

I plan on asking the pedi about it at his 2 year appointment but until then I plan on using hats and limiting sun time instead of using sunscreen.  Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

Re: Sunscreen allergies?

  • Ella has always been sensitive to certain kinds of sunscreen...no water babies, Aveeno, or other common brands. We started using Earth's Best, California Baby or Burt Bees. I tried the neutrogena sunblock and she had a small reaction to that too. I do recommend those 3 brands though if you haven't tried them yet!
  • I have an allergy to most sunscreens... my doc suspects I'm allergic to Oxybenzone which is in almost every sunscreen.  Perhaps try one without that ingredient?

I haven't tried the burt's bee's one, but may have to give that a shot this year.  Neutrogena makes one without oxybenzone in it and I do okay with that one.

  • Does LO break out without sunscreen on a sunny day? I am allergic to the sun. Yep. The sun.

I have very fair irish skin and for the first few months of spring/early summer my arms continuously break out into little rash. It takes a few months before my skin builds up a tolerance. Sun screen doesn't help and sometimes seems to make the issue worse.
