The criminal justice system? kind of random and a little PWish today, but I need to prove a point to my supervisor:
Without googling: (and no judgment whatsoever if you don't know these answers, please say so - you'd actually be helping me out. Please provide as much information as you know, or think you know, even if you think it's incorrect)
1. do you know the difference between probation and parole?
2. the difference between jail and prison?
3. the difference between bail and bond?
4. does your state use the death penalty?
5. What is community corrections?
6. What's the difference between a misdoneanor and a felony?
7. are those with felonies allowed to vote?
thanks girls!
Re: How much do you know about...
Stand up for something you believe in.
nope, you don't count!
How about me? Not so much an attorney, but still in the legal field...?
updated 10.03.12
ok, you can both play. But wait until everyone else plays first. Or email me your answers. Don't give all the answers away.
please do guess. My supervisor thinks that everyone in the general public knows these answers, and I'm trying to show her that isn't the case. That unless someone has been some way involved with the system, that they don't know these answers.
Sitting here with my freshman- juniors and they had many answers that I did not know that answers to.
1. do you know the difference between probation and parole? I know there's a difference, but not well enough to put it into words. I think the difference is slight and has to do with the punishment/repercussions if you commit a crime again.
2. the difference between jail and prison? um...
3. the difference between bail and bond? I'm not sure I've heard of "bond" in this context.
4. does your state use the death penalty? I don't think so, but don't quote me.
5. What is community corrections? no clue.
6. What's the difference between a misdoneanor and a felony? This is the kind of question I'd ask Clint and he'd tell me, then I'd probably forget later.
7. are those with felonies allowed to vote? maybe? or maybe not?
I suck. I'm only smart at science. I never took any classes in school that covered these types of topics, and this isn't something I'd pay attention to with no reason.
thanks Wamo and dbucks! Again, my intention isn't to make anyone feel dumb, just trying to prove a point. I'll provide the answers later if you guys want me to.
thanks! Anyone else want to play? Please?
I will do my best. I got an A in Criminal Justice 101 about 4 years ago and since Jon is a CJ major I better get at least one right! lol
1. do you know the difference between probation and parole? umm probation is a sentence and parole is what you get after serving a sentence.
2. the difference between jail and prison? I think jail is minimum security and a prison has a higher level of security (more dangerous offenders)
3. the difference between bail and bond? I didn't think there was a difference
4. does your state use the death penalty? No WI does not
5. What is community corrections? A daytime facility where people are sentenced to do some community service but they don't stay at the facility
6. What's the difference between a misdoneanor and a felony? A felony is a more serious crime, usually a longer stay in jail.
7. are those with felonies allowed to vote? I think they can
Hmm...not sure, but I'll give it a whirl. My background is sociology, so I feel like I should know these.
1. do you know the difference between probation and parole? I think parole is what people who have been in prison get after serving time. For example, they can be released early from prison but have to be on parole for a certain amount of time. If they mess up while on parole, they go back. Probation is more up front, if someone commits a crime and it is their first time, they might be sentenced to x amout of probation. If they mess up on probation, they will likely have to serve time.
2. the difference between jail and prison? Hmm...I think jails are temporary (like in local police departments), whereas prison is where you get sentenced to for long periods of time?
3. the difference between bail and bond? Nope, don't know this one.
4. does your state use the death penalty? I don't think so (?)
5. What is community corrections? Purely a guess, but this might involve community based services and rehabilitation while living in the community or a half-way house of some sorts.
6. What's the difference between a misdoneanor and a felony? Felonies are more serious.
7. are those with felonies allowed to vote? No.
That was rough, I didn't know any of these with certainty.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
Am I too late?
1. do you know the difference between probation and parole? - probation is where you don't go to jail but you will if you mess up again, and parole is where you get out of jail but you'll go back if you mess up again?
2. the difference between jail and prison? - jail is where you go....okay, i honestly don't know.
3. the difference between bail and bond? - bail is what you pay to get out, and a bond is when you borrow the money from a bondsman? Yes?
4. does your state use the death penalty? - I think so.
5. What is community corrections? - Is that like when you see the prisoners cleaning up the side of the road and stuff?
6. What's the difference between a misdoneanor and a felony? - I know a felony is worse.
7. are those with felonies allowed to vote? - no?
thanks so much gals! You've been a huge help. Anyone actually want me to supply the answers?
YES PLEASE! I wish to learn!
Ditto!! I want to know if I got any correct!
I'm going to wing it on all of these and probably embarrass myself, but here goes....
1. do you know the difference between probation and parole? I think probation is something you get instead of jail time, where parole is what you get when you're released from jail/prison
2. the difference between jail and prison? Jail is short term, prison long term?
3. the difference between bail and bond? I honestly have no idea. Maybe a bond is where they take collateral rather than money.
4. does your state use the death penalty? I don't think so.
5. What is community corrections? Not sure
6. What's the difference between a misdoneanor and a felony? A felony is a crime that can earn you prison time, a misdemeanor is any other crime that's not a felony.
7. are those with felonies allowed to vote? I don't think so.
How'd I do?? lol
I'll play. However, I'm really stinky at putting my thoughts into words today:
1. do you know the difference between probation and parole? Parole is after a person has been in prison and they have the opportunity to shorten their sentence for good behavior or other legal stuff I don't know. (ex. the guy who attempted to kidnap me had a sentence of 7-14 yrs, after 7 years he was up for parole). Probation, I'm not too sure if it is instead of serving time or in addition to, but I know it has something to do with checking in with a probation officer and making sure you are following the "rules." (ex. Danny's cousin violated his probation by being caught with meth in his drug test)
2. the difference between jail and prison? Jail is 0-12 months of time, prison is a lengthier sentence.
3. the difference between bail and bond? Not a clue. Maybe has something to do with the severity of the crime or amount of money to be paid?
4. does your state use the death penalty? No idea...but with the way the budget is going, I'd venture a no.
5. What is community corrections? Another hell if I know. My guess would be like being sentenced to rehab instead of jail/prison; or community service type things
6. What's the difference between a misdoneanor and a felony? a misdemeanor is less severe than a felony and you aren't in jail/prison as long?
7. are those with felonies allowed to vote? I'd say yes, but I'm not 100% on it. I bet it depends on the state though.
Me too! I was just going to ask when/if we will get answers. I think going to google would just confuse me more.
