Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

We are going on a cruise this summer (we decided to skip the AI for now, there were too many choices and I was overwhelmed!) and I am starting to plan our activities while in the ports.  The first port I am working on is Half Moon Cay.  Who has been?  This is Carnival's private island in the Bahamas. We have been to RC's island (CoCo Cay) and didn't do much of anything other than lay in the sun.  The guys snorkled with their own gear.  Should we plan on doing the same thing here? I will be checking cruisecritic.com as well, I just wanted some of your ideas. TIA!

Re: Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

  • Hi, I've been there. There's not a whole lot to do really. We just sat in a hammock and went in the water. They had a big picnic-type lunch for everyone half way through the day. There are also waiters with tropical beverages waiting by : )  It was more of a get off the boat and relax on shore thing.
  • i agree with pp, there isn't much to do since it's sort of a fake island and not a real town.  i would use it as down time to relax.  That's what we usually do on the cruiseline's private islands.  One time we did the waverunner excursion and H loved it but I was terrified... yeah I'm kind of a wimp.  But if you like waverunners it's pretty cool I guess, we saw a starfish that was pretty much the size of our waverunner.

  • Okay, so it is like Coco Cay, that's what I figured.  Thanks!

Sorry to be commenting so late on this but I don't get on the nest much! :(

DH and I took a cruise on the Carnival Liberty in 2009. First stop was Half Moon Cay, then there were stops in St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, and Grand Turk. We had excursions planned for both Grand Turk & St. Thomas, so we figured we'd just have the Half Moon Cay day as a "lounge around the beach and relax" day.

We wished that we had booked an excursion!! And my suggestion is to book something!! Snorkeling, waverunning... anything! The "private island" doesn't feel so private when you're sharing it with 3,000+ people and they all have the same thing in mind as you! We were wading in the water with many other people.... had to say 'excuse me' several times... this was NOT my idea of a great time. The only trade-off was that the water was absolutely beautiful. But I think we would have had a much better time that day if we booked an excursion. Because the beach and the water was packed with people. And being in a huge crowd of people was not exactly my idea of a nice, relaxing day.

Hope this helps you! Have a great time! :)
