POLL: Think back for me

How old were you when you were allowed to go to and from school alone and where did you live at the time?

No, I'm not wondering because I want to send Mini alone, but I see that first graders(so 6 and 7 year olds) are allowed off the school bus without a parent to meet them and I just think that's too young. Indifferent Am I crazy?

Our grade school wasn't close enough for us to walk, and there was no bus service (Catholic school), so it wasn't really an issue.  My mom dropped us and the neighbor kids off in the morning on her way to work, and the neighbor picked us all up and brought us home.  There's no way I would let a kid that young wait at the bus stop alone or walk alone.

  • Yeah, I went to Catholic school my whole life so there are no school buses anyway. My parents were a little on the overprotective side though, so I wasn't allowed to take the city bus to and from school until high school. After about a year of that the novelty had worn off and I realized that being dropped off by my dad was waaaaaaaaaay better than enduring over an hour on the bus. Still took the bus home though.

I know! I mean, she is the only one I have. Maybe if I had a few kids I'd feel like I could spare one or something. I kid, I kid!!

  • I was a "walker" in elementary school  For a really long time.  It was far from my house to the school too!  I think my Mom would drive me in, I don't really remember.  I know I walked home A LOT.  I would leave with a group of kids but by the time we got to the "U-Turn" (two streets connected) I was on my own and afraid of the neighbors dogs.  Sometimes my sitter would meet me at the corner, because where I lived as a little kid, it was super busy road.  Some of you may know the street, Scotland Hill Road in what's called Chestnut Ridge (it was Spring Valley back when I lived there).

With James, I didn't worry, because his elementary school provided bus service to and from his school.  So there was always someone there in the afternoon (I drove him in the mornings).  He didn't start going to school on his own until he was in Middle school.

  • I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I lived about 4 or 5 blocks from school and my mom dropped me off in the am and on the way home we would walk in a group of 3-4 kids and trail off as we passed the next kids house.

I lived in a quiet suburb in westchester and most of my "walk home group" lived in our apartment complex

My dad drove me to school and my mom picked me up until I was in 12th grade, hahaha! We lived too close for bussing and my sister and I were lazy (read: slept until the last minute, etc.) and we didn't want to walk.

  • same here, I was always drove to school as well. I def understand what you mean about her being so young to walk alone. I would completely feel the same way.
  • We always rode the bus or were driven in.  We were too cool for the bus come middle school and we lived close by but no side walks.

I started driving in/cutting beginning of junior year, but I had to park at the elementary school and walk over to the high school.

  • That said... my 2 years teaching in the Bronx I was shocked that the kids came and went by themselves.

At 3rd grade they could walk home at dismissal no adults, and also could pick up and walk home younger siblings. My 3rd grader would sign out his sister in K and sister in 1st and walk them home on FORDHAM RD and GRAND CONCOURSE!!!

  • I rode the school bus for 13 years!  40 minutes each way!  Through the rain, snow, sleet.... Stick out tongue  But up until 4th grade there was a parent home.  After that we were home by ourselves but only for 30 minutes.

  • I grew up in Warwick and each schoool was about a mile from my house. I always took the bus, the stop was right in front of my house. My mom was a sahm and in elementary she used to sit on the porch in the morning to see me off and would be there in the afternoon when I got home. For a while she said I thought she just sat there all day. In middle school Id go out by myself. Once I think I walked with some neighbors but only once! I took the bus thru sophomore year of hs then a friend drove me the last few yrs

In Suffern we weren't allowed to walk to school but it would have been too far to walk anyway-4 miles to the HS and 2.5-3 miles to MS and elementary school.  I took the bus or my mom drove me.  In elementary school the bus came into the parking lot (I lived in a park so yeah there was a whole parking lot) and for MS/HS I had to walk to the road.  I don't know at what age my mom stopped walking us to the stop but she could see me from the house for both stops.

THIS to a T!  Except  I had to take 3 buses from one end of Brooklyn to the other.....come to think about it I've always commuted to school/work over 1.5 hours since 14......

But I am not a good person to ask, I was not allowed to date until 18 with a chaperon.

I lived on the other end of the street from my elementary school.  Someone walked me until i got older and then i would meet my best friend and walk...and we would be amongst other kids that were walking too.  You are talking late 70s...and a very small town.  Things were lots different then.

  • not until i was in 6th or 7th grade so, 12ish. I lived 2 blocks from my school.

My younger niece (11) and nephew (9) are allowed off the bus with my 15 year old nephew and have been for 2 years, but the bus drops them off right in front of there building in the complex they live.  And my sister has to write the school a note allowing it.  But I don't remember the age or grade restriction they have in general.  At 6 or 7 my kid will not be walking home from school by them selves.
