I just found out last night that one of my former students was stabbed and murdered. He was a senior in high school, only 17. This happened while he was playing basketball at 7 pm on a Saturday (in daylight!) Other teachers are speculating why this happened but I just feel sorry for him and his family. Words cannot express my feelings. I just sat and cried when I heard the news last night. This student was always in a good mood. He worked really hard and was an honors student in high school (that wasn't the case in middle school but he decided to try harder and it showed). He was also a track star. He actually recorded a rap song that was played on a local radio station about stopping the violence in Albany. He made the local papers and everything with that song. I just can't imagine why someone who was so against the violence would be stabbed and killed. My heart goes out to his family. He will be missed!
Re: Teachers - so sad
oh that is just heartbreaking especially since he was really applying himself.
:::hugs::
Sorry. He was a junior, not a senior. I got a little ahead of myself.
I'm so ticked off at my co-workers about it. We got into a huge fight today. They figure that since he transferred to Albany he MUST be in a gang or sold drugs or something to "bring this on". REALLY? Come on! I feel he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This happened at Hoffman field. For crying out loud, we play softball there in a league and I've never seen or heard anything bad about the park. It's a nice park and they really updated it lately to be even better. He was playing basketball and someone probably lost and got mad. Who knows? I'm SO angry at my co-workers for speculating. They have NO CLUE what they are talking about. I stormed out today, extremely frustrated.
She wasn't the only one. It was all 3 of them who agreed to it. Sad. Plus the SS teacher has a student teacher who just lost one of her students from her first placement in a car accident over the weekend. The poor girl was a mess and wanted to go to her first placement for the day to grieve with them but she couldn't. Instead the SS teacher walks around the hallway and leaves her in the class by herself - it's NOT her solo week either. It's her last week here and they should be transitioning back to teaching. But no, the SS teacher is such a leech!
Thanks ladies! I'm going to his services tomorrow. I'm sure it'll be tough there but I want to show his mom my support and that he was a good kid and will be missed.
That's so sad. We lost a student a few years ago when he was shot outside of our school in the evening. Really tough to go through.
As far as the Albany/gang thing, as a teacher who works in an inner city school, I can tell you they are way off base and stereotypical. The sad truth is that many victims of violence aren't in gangs at all, but rather they are targeted because they are trying to "do too much", as they say in DC. He was getting good grades, on the track team, recording a rap, etc. and unfortunately, many in the communities of inner cities feel that this is going against what it means to be in _________ (insert city name). It's so sad. I see it here in DC a lot and hear it from students all the time. I'm obviously not sure if that's the case here, but just because he was killed doesn't mean he was involved. At all.
SO TRUE! He was against the violence and crimes. You can see his rap on youtube, more rhymes less crime.
UPDATE: they charged 2 boys, 16 and 19, with the murder. The 19 year old held him while the 16 year old stabbed him it seems. There were many witnesses, including young children. That in itself is disturbing. No reason was stated as to why the boys did this but I still feel he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
