Bathtub just won't come clean

So I moved into my apartment a year ago and have been cleaning the shower/bathtub area roughtly twice a month since I moved in.  Despite my best efforts and extreme scrubbing the bathtub and tiles just WON"T COME CLEAN! It's driving me nuts, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a cleaning product that will cut through soap scum and whatever else builds up in a shower.

Thanks!

  • Mr Clean Magic Eraser for Bathrooms. Takes a lot of arm power but it works!
  • ZEP tile and tub spray (or somethingalong those lubes), commercial grade. Can find for about $2 at Home Fepot. Fumes, but very effective for a lot of tub issues.
  • I've had good luck with Comet and a lot of elbow grease.

  • Comet, a scrub brush and a ridiculous amount of hard scrubbing.

I got something that sounds like this, but I don't think it was made by Mr. Clean. but it sure looks like a magic eraser. I think it is called a soap scum remover. I had no idea my issue was soap scum. The tub just looked dingy no matter how hard I scrubbed and no matter what I used. then I tried these soap scum eraser things and I couldn't believe the crap that come off my tub. it was amazing!!!! and it sparkled. found them at target.

  • I second Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser.  My tub was also gross and it killed me.  I'm sure it's horrible for the environment but I live with my guilt.  Once we're finished with the soap we have I'm buying body wash (I hear it doesn't leave soap scum?).  You will leap for joy after you scrub your tub with it.  It changed my life.
  • Once you do get it all clean, you probably won't have to scrub so hard or use harsh chemicals anymore.  Get a squeege (sp?) to wip down the walls when you're getting out of the shower and drying it up will be a hugh lifesaver from here on out.

I went through this issue a while back.  I can't even remember what exactly worked, but I know it involved a lot of elbow grease.
  • My favourite, easy way of cleaning the tub and shower walls is also the Mr. Clean Eraser.  I pump up the power with a liberal spraying of Fantastik original spray on the surface that I'm going to clean.

  • I use 409 and a sponge on the scrubby side. It works well for me. :)

Commet is also good. I just don't like how it is hard to rinse off. (If you don't have a detatchable shower head.)

  • The ONLY thing that really worked well on our super grungy tub was Kaboom Foam Tastic and a Mr. Clean heavy duty magic eraser.  I tried about 15 other things and none of them did diddly squat.  I left the Kaboom foam on there for about 30 minutes and then scrubbed the snot out of it with the magic eraser.  And it was BRIGHT WHITE.  Now I just use some vinegar and a Mr. Clean magic eraser for "maintenance" cleaning.

  • Thank you so much for all of the advice! Sounds like I've got quite the task ahead of me, but this will all make it a lot easier
