Re: Osama Bin Laden is DEAD!!!
Of course I am happy about this, but I am not as ecstatic as most people are. People are acting like this is the end, we won, etc. IMO, the Taliban isn't just going to roll over and die now that he's dead. If anything, it's probably given them a new "cause" to avenge.....someone is going to step up and take his place, and who knows if that new leader is going to be even worse than Bin Laden. We still have a long road ahead of us :-(
Sorry to be a debbie downer - I really am happy that they caught him!
This is an interesting topic that has caused some real viciousness today (in my world it has)
Last night I was sleeping when this all happened, and woke up to some of the most insane posts on my FB feed that went beyond Bin Laden being killed, but wandered into anti Muslim/Arab sentiment. These are people that I've known for years condoning the torture and "rounding up" of people and "taking them out" - and I am astounded by it.
In turn, I posted a status update that I was concerned at the direction that humanity is taking when we can condone the torture of others to further our beliefs.
And the attacks that flew - and they flew in from my husband's side of the family, calling me un-American, etc and instructing me to talk to some of the people who lost loved ones..
So the thing here is that I lost my own family during this, and many friends. I was there on the day of, I get it! And personally I feel that the death of Bin Laden not only does NOT bring justice (I mean, those that passed are still gone - no changing that) however - this was not a "victory" that everyone is treating it to be. Bin Laden is dead, and someone (maybe multiple "someones") will replace him - and the way it works: they will want revenge. Al quaeda is still here, and terrorism hasnt gone away..this is no victory, but the beginning.
Scary times...

I'm sorry people were so unreally cruel to you! And I'm sorry about your family and friends lost. I thankfully haven't lost anybody in the tragedy of 9/11, but I am too astounded by people's reactions! I mean people are literally rejoicing in someone's death, that's just absolutely unbelievable to me. Yes, he was a bad guy, yes, thousands of people died at his hand, but to actually be happy that someone is dead just seems inhumane to me! And I totally agree with you that this isn't the end, this isn't some sort of a victory for us as a nation. I fear that there will be retaliation, I think it's naive to expect this to be a total victory and not prepare for any more attacks. But maybe I'm just being a paranoid freak...

Knottie/Nesti Irina just posted this as her FB status and I stole it from her:
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that"

I am glad that he has been caught, he needed to be. But I agree, I don't think his death will change what the world has become. We are no safer today than we were before we he was killed.
I am not usually a pro-death as punishment type of gal, but in this instance, I think that the government made the right call about killing him on the spot. I don't know if that was the intent, to just go in and kill him or if he was killed as part of the fire fight. But after the Saddam Hussein debacle, I don't think the country's psyche could have taken it if Osama had been brought back alive and put on trial. The chaos that would have created would have been devastating. It disturbs me a bit that I feel that death with no trial is a good solution, but that is my own internal problem.
Late to the party, but I agree with this. I can't think of anything that his death changes.
I do wish that he could have been brought to trail in the Hague. While you may be right that it would cause a lot of chaos, if the US is going to make it a goal to spread democracy in the Middle East, we need to be practicing what we preach. Last I checked, we do not preach assassination. They went in on a kill mission.
