Vacation: San Francisco or San Diego?
I'm thinking about vacation in August, and I've been to SF while my fella has been to SD. We have credit on Southwest, and those look like they may be the best options for "free" tickets.
Have you been to either/both? Did you love one or the other? What sorts of really fun things did you do there?
Re: Vacation: San Francisco or San Diego?
Hmm... How long are you going for?
I love San Diego because it's so laid back. If you stay in the gaslamp district, there's a lot you can walk to: great restaurants, fun jazz clubs. I also really like Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. You need a full day to really take in the Zoo. It's huge. But even with that, you could probably see San Diego in a long weekend.
San Fransisco is awesome, too. There's definitely more "stuff" to do there: Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Warf, tons of sight seeing. When I'm there, I feel like I'm constantly on the move, but that's usually been because we've been trying to cram a whole week's worth of stuff into a weekend.
So I'm really no help. Both are awesome and would be fun.
i lived in the bay area and worked in SF for a couple years. a great perk about san francisco is that it's great for an active vacation. you won't need a car (unless you want to head up to marin county or napa) because you can pretty much get around by walking or bus/BART/MUNI train. (taxis are harder to come by.) the city is small, so you can cover a lot of ground. fun little neighborhoods to explore. crazy hills to hike. urban setting with a lot green space. places to go: golden gate park, legion of honor, hike up to coit tower, walk along the embarcadero to fisherman's wharf, chinatown, the castro (gotten really touristy lately), dolores park, alamo square park aka full house hill...
DH and i went on our honeymoon to san diego, and we loved all the nature time. it was very relaxing while invigorating. torrey pines state park in la jolla, balboa park, and the san diego zoo were all amazing. we stayed in the gaslamp district - all walking distance to international restaurants. you will need a car though. not easy to get around to all the different attractions and parks.
it really depends on what type of vacation you want, but i recommend both for different reasons.
We're thinking about 4 nights (so 5 days), but with travel that usually means three full days and a couple of partial days.
Thanks for all the input, ladies! I feel like we might end up having to flip a coin; both cities sound really fun.
