any tips on hand washing clothes?

hope this isn't a silly question :)

i've ruined a few things by putting them in the wash with out reading their care labels... so i've just started to hand wash some of my clothes and swimsuits.  it seems to take sooooo long, lol.  anyone have any tips on steps for hand washing?

right now, i am filling up a large pot with water, adding a little detergent, and doing one piece at a time... it just takes forever to get the soap out and wring it out.  any advice would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Re: any tips on hand washing clothes?

  • Does your washuing machine have a handwash cycle?  or extra delicate?

     you could try that instead...

  • I wash hand washables in a zippered lingerie bag in cold water on the gentle cycle. I have never had a problem doing it this way. Sweaters, swimsuits, lingerie---everything comes out fine.
  • ditto the gentle cycle.

For other handwash stuff, I just fill the sink, dump in a little soap, swish, let sit, swish again, rinse, let sit, rinse and hang dry.

I really don't put that much thought into it.

  • You might try using less soap.  When I wash my delicate underthings in a gallon bucket, I put just a squirt/splash of detergent in there and it's always plenty.  I rinse them in another bucket of water and/or under the running bath faucet while wringing.

  • Some items that say hand wash, I toss in the delicate cycle of the washer and use Woolite.

The items that I hand wash in the sink: things with underwire - bras and bikini tops... all swimsuits... nice lingerie... a few tops.

I use a special swimsuit wash (speedo makes one) or Woolite.

If you want it to go a little quicker, you can rinse the soap from your items in the tub faucet. The water has more force. You can also blot items with a soft towel prior to hanging them to dry. Sorry, it just isn't a quick process.

  • Of course, this is why washing machines were invented.

I still hand wash all my bras, and some things that have embellishments, like lace or beads.

It does take awhile. I load up the sink with the lightest colors first. Swish around, let sit, and move them off to the side. Then, I load it up with darker colors, swish, let sit, and then move to the side.

Then, I quickly rinse each item under the running water.

Then, I fill the sink again with clear water. I dip each item in to get any remaining soap out.

Then, I give it a gentle squeeze, and hang to dry.

  • thanks, ladies!  i appreciate it!  i wondered about the gentle cycle on my machine, but i am always afraid to ruin something.  i will try it out with my next few items that need delicate care :)  also, great tip on using the tub faucet, that would help getting the soap out quickly and also not splash water everywhere :)
