The owner & president of our newspaper passed away last week. He was such an amazing man and a huge figure in our town so they are having a very large memorial service tomorrow at one of the local colleges.
Since it is during school hours and work hours they are having busses shuttle our workers to the service. Wonderful. Well not my department.
Turns out me and 5 others have to keep our department open for phone calls and the lobby. Everyone else gets the afternoon off to go to the service. My co-worker told me "Oh well you havent worked here that long, so you wouldn't want to go anyway." Really? I have had many wonderful conversations with him and would have liked to go and pay my respects. I may not have 20 years into this company, but damnit after being here for 4 years, I would still like to attend.
My boss asked me if I wouldn't mind working a little later because of this. I said sure only because I didn't want to start an argument, but I really am upset. We very easily could have changed deadline for 1 day and allow everyone to go. I guess it just sucks that we are expected to be here while everyone else gets to go and honor him at his service. Sorry for the long vent ![]()
Re: Would this make you upset/disapointed? (long)
I'm sorry to hear about your loss... =(
4 years is a long time at a company IMO, so I can understand how you would be upset about not being able to attend.
It sucks that just your department has to stay behind... if it was me, and someone asked if I wanted to go, especially if a deadline could have been changed, I might have spoken up.
It sucks.

They are going because once our deadline hits (5pm) they start getting everything together. Since the service is at 3, they are coming back.
I know I should have spoken up, but since everyone is having a hard time with his passing, I didn't want to be the person to make a huge deal about it.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
gotcha. what they should have done, then, is move your deadline UP to like 2pm so you could all go.
I'm sorry they did that to you. It really sucks.
