I need some advice.

Hi ladies,

I'm between a rock and a hard place right now and I don't really know what to do so any words of wisdom would be really appreciated.

Some of you know that I hate my current job and I've been wanting to leave my job for a long time but H wanted to have something before I left. Well oppurtunity has finally given the chance to leave. It's for a before and after school program that I worked at high school and loved. It would be for the rest of this school year (and the director will have positions for next school which I will be interviewed for in June). Also tomorrow, I have an interview for Tutor Time (I'm not sure about the position yet I will find out tomorrow). If I have these, I want to leave. However, H in concerned and won't let me leave my current job if I don't work for July and August. I would need to bring in the same amount of income that I would be now for those two months. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do for the two months? I desperately want to leave  my job and more forward. Like I said any help would be appreciated.

Re: I need some advice.

  • Hmmm, that's a tough one. Do temp agencies still exist or is that a thing of the past? I know that jobs are still hard to come by for most people right now, so I hope you get one that you DO like.

They do exist - Kelly Services is down your way, I used them when I left teaching and they're fab. I'm sure there are places that are looking for summer hires, check out some retail places, I'm certain they're hiring for the summer, but it may not bring the income you're looking for. GL

  • Two words Summer Camps.

I'm not sure if the pay would be equal but it would get you some income.  They have been hiring and do a lot of it this month so it's a good time to start looking.

  • Actually, summer camps will have filled all their positions by now and would be in the training process.  Summer camp hiring begins in February.  FYI, I've looked into Tutor Time before and was offered a teaching position but only at $12 an hour -- not worth it to me.  I would look into nannying or sitting for the summer.  I've found great people through sittercity.com.  Sitters in my area can make $15-$20/hr depending on how many children you watch.  Good luck!

  • Every camp job I have gotten in the past I was hired in May. Sorry I guess things have changed.

  • Really?  That's surprising.  I worked for camps from 16-21 years old.  Then I worked on the hiring end.  We were always filled up by May.  You can check into it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'm sorry you're so unhappy with your job.  As much as it stinks, I agree with your H that it's not a great time to be unemployed so even if you hate a job, it's better than nothing.  I think the idea of a temp agency is a good one.  I would not leave your current job until you have something lined up for the summer, especially since you are not officially hired for next school year yet.  Is the before/after school program going to be a full time job or are you going to need something else to supplement that during the school year too?  Good luck with everything!

    My thoughts exactly.

I agree it's just hard. I guess I don't find it worth it because the $ sucks and it's not that many hours. The before/after school program is part time, but it's double the time I'm working now which is why it works. I'm just so confused with everything right now!

  • I'd suggest retail too. They will definitely be hiring for the summer.

What was your college degree in?  If you're looking to work with kids, there are day care places that you could look in to and those are year round.  Indeed.com is a great site to check for job postings too.
