I'm very proud of Skylar

Sky did something on Sunday that took a LOT of courage.  She received a text from a friend (A) and it basically said goodbye to her friends and the world is better off without her.  Sky asked "what?!" and A replied that she was going to commit suicide.  So Skylar came out to me right away and told me what was going on.  We called the police immediately and told them what was going on and I told Sky to keep her on the phone busy with texts so she typed what I told her to until the police showed up.  They went there first and took her into custody and brought her up to Altru hospital to the psych ward and she is on suicide watch there.  :(  Then they came and got a statement from us.  It just breaks my heart that a 13 year old feels there is no other way do deal with their problems.  I know she has a tough home life.  She has been at our place a couple times and has a breakdown each time.  So I end up spending a little time with her alone and just talking and that seems to help.  she has told me "I wish my parents would talk to me like you do"  :'(

But I am VERY proud of Skylar for coming to me right away.  It could have been an attention thing, it could have been serious.  But either way she told me, "mom I'm scared because A is going to be mad at me for us calling the police, but I couldn't risk losing a friend."  I expressed to her how wonderful it is that she did come to me and that she may possibly just have saved her friends' life.

  • That just gave me the chills.  Sometimes the right thing is really hard to do.  But if her friend is mad at her for awhile, at least she is alive and can get help.  I can't imagine how Sky might have felt if she didn't say anything and the friend did something drastic.

    Way to go Sky!!!

  • yeah...it was awfully tense at our house Sunday night.  But I tol dher the EXACT same thing Kiz.  I told her that she has to think about how she would have felt if her friend did kill herself and she knew and did nothing.

I totally agree with this!  What a brave thing for Skylar to do.  I hope that her friend gets the help that she needs.
