Moving to South Portland?

My husband just took a job in the Portland area so we are looking to move instead of him commuting. Is there any places in Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, ect that we should definitely avoid? I've looked at a few apartment complex's online (Redbank, Princeton Pines, Brick Hill, Summit Terrace, ect) but its hard to really tell from the pictures. We're going to see a couple on Friday and I am just keeping my fingers crossed they arent in a bad area or ghetto-ish.

Re: Moving to South Portland?

  • I would avoid Red Bank. The apartments themselves aren't too bad on the inside, but the complex has a pretty bad reputation as far as the people that live there. I am not sure about the other places you mentioned.

DH and I lived in S. Portland for 3 years. We lived over near the Coast Guard Base and Southern Maine Community College area. I would definitely recommend that section of town as opposed to the mall area, but that's just my preference. We lived at Mill Company Gardens (actually owned by the same people as Red Bank). The apartment itself wasn't anything spectacular, but it was in a nice area of town (close to Portland, Mill Creek shopping area, Green Belt walkway, Willard Beach and Casco Bay). The landlord, Larry (not sure if he's still there or not) was great and the maintenance dept was always timely with any issues.

  • OK I just noticed you have  2 kids and Mill Company Gardens are all 1 bedroom....so I guess I'm not really helpful! Might be worth it to drive around though to find something too. There are a lot of "non- complex" type places that rent apartments that may not be listed online. :)
  • DON'T move to Red Bank.... that place is awful!

  • I've only lived in Portland. The absolute worst neighborhood I lived in was in the West End of Portland, right off of Congress Street. We lived on Horton Place off of Dow and it was AWFUL. The SWAT team raided my apartment one day looking for some drug dealer who apparently used to live there. I saw more fights and drama out my window than anywhere else I've ever lived.

The nicest neighborhoods I've lived in are near the USM campus in Portland. I also had a good experience living on Spruce St. in the West End (further from Congress Street than the terrible neighborhood I lived in).

Red Bank has a bad reputation, but we actually lived there for 2 or 3 years quite pleasantly.  I think maybe it's cleaned up a little and some parts of it are crappier than others.  It's a lot of lower income families, which doesn't necessarily mean anything, and some younger couples and college students.  Our neighbors on all sides were very nice, quiet, just people that couldn't afford a house.  We had a two bedroom duplex, our own basement, yard, driveway.  We could garden, have BBQ's etc. We were tired of living in an apartment, but couldn't afford a house, so this was a nice compromise.  Our apartment was actually in pretty good shape.  Not for everyone, but it worked for us at the time, so I had to represent! :)  If I was going to live in S. Portland again now, I'd rather live in the Mill Creek part of S. Portland.

Before that we lived in Park Side on High St. in Portland...now that is a bad place to live, so I might be biased.   (Okay, clearly we picked our apartments based on our budget rather than the location!!)

  • Thanks so much for the advice so far! That really stinks about redbank, because it seemed too good to be true. We were actually looking at the townhouse one, like described where we could BBQ and stuff. No wonder there are a lot of vacancies, no one wants to live there lol.
  • we have a cute little two-bedroom on the East End of Portland...it's a house owned by a local family (they don't live here...there is another tenant on the second floor)...after spending two days visiting apartments we found on Craigslist, we literally just drove around the East End and called a couple of phone numbers on For Rent signs...the landlord here said she has never posted when the place is available because she always gets people that just drive by...so, if you're open to a house rental, you may have luck just driving around neighborhoods that you get a good feel from
