the bright side of cost cutting

So I posted last week that we're cutting 50K out of the budgets for the next two months (5% of our total operating budget for the month). Our big cut will be making all full time (30+ hrs) take 8 hours of unpaid time off and part time 4 hrs for each month.

I'm 32 hrs/wk (which already blows financially) so I already work 4 day weeks...so now between Memorial Day and the furlough days, 3 of the next 6 weeks will be 3 day work weeks. The 3 weeks I have 4 day weeks I have to leave early one of the days  because I work late another one of the days (typically I just work extra but that won't help our bottom line so I'm keeping my hours as close to scheduled as possible).

Even though my ass is going to be poor as hell and I already have more work to do than I know what to do with, I'm pretty excited to have extra days off. I HATE working in the summer!

Re: the bright side of cost cutting

  • May's going to be slow for me, but June will be chaos because of enrollment. I know it sucks to take furlough days, but way to look at the bright side. :)

  • Im so sorry that you have to cut back more hours!  But at least you'll be spending more time with May during the summer months!!

I dont know if you do it now, but I have started cutting coupons and only buying things that are on sale at the grocery stores, and it has helped tremendously!!!!!

Yesterday our food bill was $40.00 once all the sales prices and coupons were deducted, our bill came to $17.00!!!!

How long do you have to work short weeks?

  • I know financially it stinks but do you at least save on sitter costs to help?  Also, if you have to do any shopping, you get to miss the crowds :)

  • It stinks to take the time off, but at least it off sets the sitter a little.  And more time with May is always a good thing.

Unfortunately it doesn't, she's the same price regardless...although that means if I ever actually get to work a 40 hour week it wouldn't go up.

This is definitely a bonus! And on the flip side, since your sitter is the same price if you need to take a day for yourself it won't cost you any more Smile

I was just thinking this!! You can take a day to run errands, grocery shopping, pamper yourself or even just get things done around the house.

When I began reading, I assumed you were speaking about your home budget. I got through this paragraph and my mouth dropped WIDE open.

    LOL
