Job vibes etc.. (kinda long)

So I need lots of vibes for a job I just applied for. It's within the same school district I currently work for (as a sub). It is an Administrative Assistant position- in charge of classroom management at a local high school. I would REALLY love this job, it would be more reliable then subbing, and I would get paid more!! I really NEED vibes that I get called for an interview and that all things go well!!!

Now I need an opinion as well... So DH and I decided a while ago that we were going to start TTC in May (this month). Well if I get this new job I would be on a 10 month probation and that wouldn't start until August as far as I know...Now we plan to continue our plan of TTC this month because I may not get the job and then it wouldn't matter, but DH wants to continue our TTC plan even if I get the job...what are you thoughts?

Re: Job vibes etc.. (kinda long)

  • One of the main reasons I'm trying to get the new job now is because I don't want to be TTC when I'm starting a new job.

Personally I'm not comfortable with starting a job and saying ok now I'm leaving to have a baby. If you can wait it out a bit and stop TTC for a few months then try again at a time where giving birth would coincide with the summer or at least during your second year on the job, thats what I would do.

However if age (I'm so sorry I can't remember how old you and DH are) or other issues are a factor then maybe that has to trump the other issues.

I just think an employee looks better if they work for a year or so. Plus there could be a waiting period for maternity leave and FMLA and things of that nature and I wouldn't want you to get stuck having issues with those sorts of things.

  • First of all, TONS of vibes and a pretzel stance for you!

As to your second question, I guess it depends how badly you're dying for a baby. A job cannot terminate you for getting pregnant, even if they hired you yesterday. I agree with Laurie that it's certainly not ideal, and I wouldn't be thrilled about going to a new employer with that information, but as long as you're a good worker and only take the allotted time off, then I think it would be fine. Plus, in the school system (at least where I live) I feel like they are super understanding of women getting pregnant.

Unfortunately you can't plan how long it's going to take you to get pregnant, so if its something that you really want to do before you are X years old, I don't know that you should let a potential new job get in the way considering it could take 6 mos- a year (or heck you could be preg before you even find out about the job!)

LAST THOUGHT of this very long ramble is that I def agree you should find out what their policies are as to FMLA/sick time/maternity leave. If you can't take paid time off until you've been there a year or more, that would factor into my decision.

  • ::Pretzel stance:: Good luck, I know you'll get an interview & do well. :)

As for the pregnancy thing I don't really have any advice but I can offer this factoid, it takes the average women 1 year to concieve. Like pps I would research the laws & make sure you qulaify for temporary disability (aka: maternity leave) right away just in case you beat the average conception time.

What she said. Also, FMLA, from what I understand, goes into effect after your introductory period expires with your job. Before I resigned, all employees had to wait 90 days before receiving health and FMLA benefits. I think it differs by state though and not necessarily by company - FMLA is separate from the company and is merely there as a protector of your rights and to ensure that you receive adequate time off and not be at risk of getting fired for doing so.

  • Commencing pretzel stance for you!!

As for your question, I would go for the job and put off TTC for a few months.  Jobs are few and far in between right now and if it's something you would love to do, don't hesitate.
