I'm getting prepared to be pi$$ed... UPDATED

You guys may or may not remember that I'm a teacher.  I've heard about and have been wanting to see Waiting for Superman.  Well, I just rented it On Demand so stand by for some angry ranting.  I'm pretty sure this is going to piss me off royally.

Have you seen it?  What did you think?

Okay, so I just finished the movie.  Some things surprised and shocked me, others did not.

I want to be sure that people understand that although we have teacher groups in TX, we do not have unions.  We do not have tenure and although there must be documentation of misconduct, etc. teachers can be fired here.   I know that we are low on the ranking of education and that embarrasses me.  I'm also embarrassed that our kids think they are so much better at everyone else when they aren't.  We aren't doing them any favors by catering to their self esteem while allowing them to stay ignorant.

I don't think kids' education should be a lottery.  If we are going to offer it we should offer quality and we shouldn't force it on those people who continuously refuse to take advantage of it.  This breaks my heart because I see parts of it everyday.  I could go on forever on this topic.  I don't get on a soapbox often but this is one area where I will.  If any of you have seen it or want ti discuss it, let me know.  Otherwise, I'll just keep typing forever.

  • I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my Netflix list! I'd be interested to hear a teacher's perspective, though.

  • I haven't seen it yet, but my sister is a former charter school teacher and currently works for Teach For America as a recruitment director so she's very involved in the "movement" for better education.  She loved the movie, FWIW.

  • i'll probably watch it eventually, so i'll be interested to see what you think.  speaking of "teacher" movies, did you ever see "chalk"?  it's a mockumentary about a high school, but it's pretty funny.

Thank you!  I have a couple of students like this whose parents just ask "well are they in school."  One kid has litterally been to class 3 days this year, the rest has been spent wandering the halls or in ISS for harassment or another million things.

Sorry, I had a rough day.  I also keep meaning to watch that movie.

  • I saw it and I was kind of mad too. There was no mention at all of the role that parents should play in a child's education. The parents were just hoping to get the kid into a good school and it was like if they could do that, then their job was done. I used to work with juvenile delinquents and it drove me nuts when the parents would just blame the teachers for their kids' behavior problems. It's the same thing with education, don't blame all the teachers when we all share a role in educating children.

  • so is it a "blame the teachers" movie because that's mainly why i haven't watched it yet.  we hear enough of that in the media and from some members of our own communities; i don't want to spend a couple of hours of my time watching a movie about it.

To me, it's more of a "blame the system" movie.  Yes, it does talk about some of the teachers who aren't doing a good job and are still teaching but I didn't really feel like it blamed them.  It showes some people who really want to make a difference but can't because of all the other bs that goes on.  ITA that it's a systematic problem.
