Boston Hotel Recs

Hi Ladies!

A few months ago I posted that DH and I are coming to Boston in June. We're so excited! We'll be out in Plymouth for two nights for a wedding, and then are planning to stay in Boston the last two nights to enjoy the city.

Currently, I have a reservation at the Doubletree on Washington for $229 per night. I have been watching hotel rates, and see that there are some better deals at the following hotels. Any input as far as raves/rants would be much appreciated. TIA for your input!

1. Club Quarters on Devonshire St for $171 per night

2. The Royal Sonesta, 40 Edwin H. Land Boulevard, Cambridge, MA for $169 per night

3. Hotel Marlow--a Kimpton Hotel at 25 Edwin H. Land Blvd, Cambridge, MA for $186 per night

4. The Bulfinch at 107 Merrimac St, Boston, MA for $199

OH, and just to add, those are all prepay rates so that if I booked it, I couldn't keep watching rates and change our reservation. And not to make it sound like this is all about money, we just would rather get the best rate we can and have more money to spend on other activities.

Re: Boston Hotel Recs

  • I'm all about a good deal, no need to apologize for that!

I haven't stayed at Club Quarters but I think it's more basic than your usual hotel. Have you looked it up on TripAdvisor? The location is good though.

I like Kimptons and the Marlowe is nice but you'll be in Cambridge and will need to take the T into Boston. Actually, the nearest stop I believe will be under construction for a while so that could be a pain (you could call the hotel and see what they know). I'd also Priceline something in the Back Bay.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • We stayed at the Bulfinch a few years ago for the Tom Petty concert at the TD Garden.  It is right across the street from there.  It was a nice hotel with a few bars/clubs within walking distance.  I did feel that the food options were limited in that area, but there is a restaurant at the hotel (it was closed by the time the concert was over and I was starving).

I wouldn't recommend staying in Cambridge. Cambridge is nice but it is away from the main attractions in Boston and you'd have to take the subway into the city.

The Club Quarters is closer to the Common and the piers if you're walking. I don't know anything about the hotel itself.

The Bulfinch is an okay location. Like PP said it is right by the Garden and the North End (good Italian restaurants) but further away from the Commons, Copley, and the Pru.

    All of this.

Don't stay in Cambridge. I stay there when I'm up for work and everyone has to drive me everywhere unless I take the T, which I do not *do* much anymore.

  • I wouldn't stay at the Club Quarters.  I stayed there one night last year after a work party and was less than impressed.  It was nice enough, but small and just not what I'd want out of a hotel I'd be staying at for more than a night

This, though I just visited people there, and it really wasn't all that great. Not worth the minimal savings, honestly.

I stayed at the Royal Sonesta once, and it was nice. But as others have said, it's not super-close to the city. The green line is closest, but that line is/will be under construction. You can walk to the red line in 15 minutes or so, but that can be a pain at the end of the day when you just want to collapse.

  • I had to post and run yesterday as I was posting from my phone and getting on a flight.  Bottom line is that none of the places you've posted are really that great, either because of location or the facility itself.

I'll suggest again that you perhaps try Pricelining something in the Back Bay.  The Doubletree's location isn't bad, but it's in the theater district and probably close to a 10 minute walk to the Commons and downtown.  Back Bay is more in the heart of things and a livelier scene.

Otherwise, at that price you might look into the Omni Parker House or the Nine Zero (another Kimpton property).  Better locations, IMHO.

  • You could also try the John Jeffries House, which is an inn right near Charles Street in Beacon Hill. My husband stayed there a few years ago when his apartment got flooded, and he said it was pretty solid. (But check out the reviews, because he's a dude who was put there by his landlord.) It's also not too far off the beaten path - you can walk to Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall in under 20 minutes, and the Common/Public Garden are only 10 minutes or so.

  • Thanks for the input ladies! I will rule out the Cambridge spots, and if anything consider the Bulfinch.

I will also check out BackBay. Any thoughts on The Midtown Hotel or The Christopher House? Several people have suggested Copley Square, but well, those are way not what we want to spend. These however, seem to be sort of in the area.

Copley Square = Back Bay.  Priceline is your friend.

I don't know where the other hotels you mentioned are located.

  • I agree with Rock's suggestion to Priceline the Back Bay.

Yeah, I got a room at the Copley Marriott for $150 on a Saturday night in June a couple of years ago- it can definitely be done.

  • I would recommend checking out the Charlesmark Hotel. The rooms are small, but it's right in Copley Square. I have housed several clinicians their for various events in town and they have really liked it. I quickly priced a rate for a weekend in June and it came up with a rate of $229 per night. The rooms are a bit small, but you can't beat the location. It's on the same block as a Green line t-stop, and really with-in walking distance from just about anything that is fun to do in Boston. (Although I have a slightly warped view of walking distance... SO and I tend to walk everywhere.)

I really like the fact that they are a small boutique hotel.

  • I have friends that have stayed at the Midtown.  Its nothing fancy, but the location is pretty good.  Its on the backside of the Pru, right across from the gorgeous Christian Science Center.  Its not a far walk from Back Bay (I think its considered the South End?).  I would def. choose it over Cambridge.

Boston is very walkable.  From the Midtown, you can be on Newbury in 10 minutes. Esp if you walk through the Prudential Center (the mall).
