What Do You Think?

What do you think of guys who don't wear their wedding ring?

Re: What Do You Think?

  • My dad is a chef - about 15 years ago he worked as an executive chef at a hotel.  He was the first one in that morning and ended up cutting his ring finger very badly.  He had to go to the ER and they had to cut his ring off so they could work on his finger.  He had the gold melted down into a tie pin & cufflinks - he hasn't worn a ring since.

A friend of mine is a cop and he won't wear his wedding ring because a guy he pulled over threatened to come after his family when he saw the ring.  Since then it's been off.

  • I hate it. DH and I argued back and both. We finally agreed on him wearing a ring and I had to "give" up something else that was important to me. For now, when he works with his hands, he carries it around in his pocket.

  • I guess if their wife is fine with it.

That was never discussed w/DH, I love seeing his ring on him, it's a sign of our commitment to each other.  DH only takes it off when he's playing softball & if he's working w/dirty things: flowers, oil/grease, etc..

When I watched the Royal Wedding on dvr I wondered why Kate didn't give him a ring, so I had to look online, I didn't know he wasn't going to wear one.

  • I give them the side-eye, but whatever.  DH didn't want to wear one, but I explained that I would be really disappointed if he didn't.  He complained that they were uncomfortable when he tried them on, but now he is used to it and it's no big deal to him.  (Ironically, he chose a very wide, very heavy one.)

My step-dad has never worn one.  Eh, I don't think twice about it anymore.  I guess the more important question is: why don't they wear one?  There's a big difference between someone who works in a field where they can't wear one (dealing with machinery, etc) vs. someone who is still picking up ladies on the weekends.  Stick out tongue

  • Personally, I like that DH wears one, and think it's nice.  However, if he didn't want to wear his, I wouldn't get bent out of shape about it.  If a man (or woman for that matter) is going to be unfaithful, they'll do it with or without the ring!

  • If they don't have a particularly good reason I judge. Being able to make more sales as a single person is not a good reason.

DH takes his off during hockey and that annoys me in itself (mostly because I don't want him to lose it).

  • I also give them the side eye.

However I do understand that in some professions or hobbies it is dangerous or not practical to wear a ring.

  • Funny thing is that my husband wears his every single day. Religiously. I on the other hand have worn mine a handful of times. I know i irritates him..I mean he spent a fortune on them and I keep them locked up. (I work in a preschool and my solitaire setting is very sharp..don't want to cut the kids and now with a newborn i definitely do not want to cut her. )

  • I think it depends on the situation - I understand it when guys have jobs where they can't wear rings. My DH however has a desk job and no good reason not to wear one, although it was never really an issue or discussion - we both knew he would wear a ring.

  • Doesn't bug me.

A only wears his when we go out. He can't wear it at work for safety reasons.

  • I honestly dont think twice about it.  Neither of my parents wore/wear wedding rings.  My dad has never had one to wear because apparently my mom never bought him one.  And my mom's figers swelled up when she was pregnant with me and never went back to their pre-pregnancy size.  She never got the ring resized to fit.  However, she was cleaning several weeks ago and came across her wedding ring.  She forced it on her finger and hasnt been able to get it off.  She now wears it becuase its suck and she refuses to go get it taken off.

My husband wears his ring almost every day.  Though he works in automotives, so he wears it to work, takes it off at work, and then puts it back on before he comes home.  I wore mine every day til a few months ago when they started to feel snug and I took them off.

  • H used to be a mechanic and couldn't wear it to work. because of that he would always forget to put it on outside of work. now he wears it every day and i like it.

I agree with Mara, it's more about why they aren't wearing it.

  • I agree with most of you.  DH wears one, but has to take it off for work some of the time.  It doesn't bother me at all.  I agree with Mara, that it's more about the reason behind their decision not to wear the ring...

Sarah - is that a goldendoodle?  My MIL has one and we're thinking of getting one.

DH wears his when he isn't in the garage and he does take it off during hockey. He is very good at remembering to put it back on - me on the other hand will take mine off during dishes and forget to put it back on, he gets sad when he notices I don't have it on.  But I never leave the house with out it.

  • H wasn't real great about wearing it all the time and then he lost it just after Christmas. I don't really care- I liked seeing him wear it but I don't really want to buy a new one. Interestingly enough though some liar douche at his work started a rumor that we are getting divorced.

  • My DH never wears any jewelry, not even a watch. But he wanted to wear a wedding ring, and I'm sure he knew it was important to me. He rarely ever takes it off. I definitely judge men who "just don't want to" wear one.

  • I think it depends on the situation, especially if the guy works with his hands and wearing a ring is dangerous (this is my case a lot actually).  However, if the guy is able to wear the ring regularly without issues, then I think he should.  I think guys should always wear the ring in social situations.

  • I don't care.  To each their own.

My h wears one, but he hates it.  Actually he didn't want one, but gave into to the idea b/c he didn't want to be judged/bothered by others.  5 years later, and the ring is still uncomfortable on his hand.

To me a piece of metal isn't what makes a marriage.

  • Eh, I don't judge. My DH doesn't like to wear his. Actually there is alot of times I do not like to wear mine either. I love my rings too.

(ex: if I'm working out at the gym. My ring cuts into my hand when I'm lifting weights and then my fingers get super swollen and the darned thing hurts. if I go to gym after work I do not wear it all day b/c knowing me & my luck, I will loose it or it will get stolen.)

Plus neither my mom nor my dad wore rings for most of their marriage for various reasons. Both were the most faithful people to each other. I personally don't think that a material object should be the biggest signifier of your commitment to each other. Your actions on a daily basis should be. JMHO.

  • I personally don't like it. DH is a mechanic though & works 6 days a week, its a hazard for him to wear it. He actually knows a guy who got his ring stuck in a car (under the hood or something somewhere) and it cut his finger off. So I agreed with not wearing it at work.

He does wear it any time not working, always. Smile

I didn't say it's the biggest signifier of commitment to each other, just a sign of our commitment.  I like to look at my ring & the inscription inside (we both have something special inside our rings) and it makes me smile when I see it.  And for me who doesn't get to see my husband M-F, I don't get to have actions on a daily basis to show our commitment, so my ring is a very special reminder, esp. when I'm out & about & just look down at it.
