You know what's hard?

Buying a mother's day card for your MIL.

I don't have a bad relationshp with my MIL but sometimes she can be crazy and she has said some awful stuff in the past to her sons. So many of the cards go on and on about how wonderful and perfect the mom is and I can't bring myself to buy her a card like that. Thank goodness for more generic happy mother's day cards!

Re: You know what's hard?

  • yeah, that would be tough! we usually pick one that is pretty and not too wordy since MIL is DH's stepmom.

  • Buying cards in general is hard, let alone for someone who kind of sucks.
  • Ugh, do not get me started. Buying Mother's Day cards for certain people in our family fills me with dread every year. Not only MIL, but also my grandmother & one of DH's - because so many of the grandmother cards go on about how the grandmother spoiled the grandchild and stuff like that, while we certainly didn't have that kind of relationship with them. I buy a lot of generic "happy Mother's Day" cards!

My step-MIL worships her pugs, and luckily this year I found a card with a pug on the front that says "sending you pugs and kisses" on the inside. She will love it, and yet it doesn't say anything about what a great mom she is. (Considering that the whole incident with her getting her feelings hurt when she drove out here with us still has not blown over, I was feeling less than affectionate when I went to pick out the cards).

  • Aww. I'm fortunate b/c my MIL rocks, but I'm pretty sure H would laugh in my face if I asked if he's getting a card for my mother.

  • This is where I'm thankful that DH is responsible for acknowledging holidays with his side of the family and I stick to mine.

I get along well with my in-laws, but we do the same thing- I just buy a Mother's Day card for my mom, he buys one for his. I never think to buy one for MIL, or my grandmother, because they are not my mother! I don't know, it just doesn't make sense to me to give Hallmark all that extra $.

    Ditto this!

  • What's harder is trying to find some flowers that you can send to both your mother and his, completing the cards, and making sure that they arrive at the right place at the right time while he is knocked out in a hospital bed 2 mile away after major surgery since you will not have time to ship the orriginal gifts. (Or the graduation gift for a SIL that is graduating tomorrow that we originally had planned on attending in FL.)

Thanks for the reminder, I suppose I have to actually get started on that.

Yes! My father is not the stereotypical sport-obsessed, beer-drinking, bbq-grilling father. Father's Day cards are not creative at all.

I have to buy all cards in our family, because DH will never do it. When I doubt, I go with something generic.
