I saw your pic/post about peru and the inca trail. I've been thinking of doing this in october and would appreciate all info, pics tips, tricks, and thoughts on your adventure and would appreciate anything you'd share. Also, how much did this trip cost you?
Re: Paging ** Lauree1183 **
Peru is amazing and if you have the chance to go definitely do it! We booked our tour through Apumayo Expeditions- their pricing is on their website. We also added two extra nights hotel prior to the beginning of our tour in Cusco. We did this to acclimate, which ended up being a great idea. Plus Cusco is so amazing and there is so much great shopping, sites, and food.
For airfare we found it cheaper to book a roundtrip flight (Delta) between MSP and Miami and then a separate roundtrip flight (LAN) between Miami and Cusco. LAN makes it easy to have a layover in Lima to/from Miami at no extra cost. I think our flights were around $1k a piece. Definitely play around with flight combos though to find the best deal.
Let me know if you have any more specific questions.
We went during the off-season in January and, because no one else booked our same tour, we ended up on a private tour.
January is summer down there and supposed to be very rainy. We got 15 minutes of rain one day during the day, that was it!!! We were so blessed. It did rain at night though.
Because our tour was private and our guide preferred to not be near a lot of people (which we were fine with) our camp was always set up well out of the way of the big groups and we had more privacy. I will say that the big groups had more of a party atmosphere, but they were in no way super loud. I could see how it would get kind of crazy during the busy season.
Anytime you go it will be amazing!!! Don't worry about it too much. I think you really can't go wrong no matter when you hike the Inca Trail. Just remember that if you are going during part of the busy season to book your permit 6 months or so in advance!!! They only allow a certain amount of people on the trail each day. Also the Inca Trail is closed in Feb for maint every year.
