s/o cabins: what do you do?
my mom wants to rent a cabin for a weekend for our family, but she's not sure what to look for.
on a lake would be great, but in my mind, we would then need a boat. what else do you do on a lake other than go out on a boat?
i'm not a fisher, i don't like seaweed, i don't like fish, i don't like bugs. i enjoy hanging out outside. i like taking a boat on and staying on the boat but i don't like swimming in lakes. i like bonfires (as long as i'm doused in bug spray).
i'm at a loss. maybe this whole cabin thing just isn't for me.

Wow, I could have written your post for you
...except I'd add I don't like wood ticks...so I'd not do any off the paved trail hikes because I'd be too paranoid I'd pick up a tick.
DH's grandparents had a cabin and we'd go up for the weekend, and we'd go out on the boat, or canoeing (I do like to fish, but not touch the fish), we played board games if it was rainy, and ate a lot. We'd go into town as well and shop at the local joints.
After his grandparents sold the cabin my IL's got a cabin up on Mantrap lake for a week and we split the week with my SIL and her family. We brought our bikes and went for bike rides, and then into Park Rapids and Walker.
There's things to do even if you're not outdoorsy heck we're almost the same in our view of things and I always had a good time.
Maybe look for a cabin with a big screened porch? = no bugs :-)
Bonfires are awesome. I like just sitting on the deck in the sun with a good book or a crossword puzzle. We play lots of cards. My sister and her friends take the boat out and just float around in the sun. We cook up big dinners on the grill and have a fabulous time eating, chatting etc. I also take lots of naps there.
I LOVE our cabin. It's a peaceful place for me where I can recharge my batteries.
ETA: We have a Mosquito Magnet and that has cut down on the amount of mosquitos greatly! It wouldn't make sense to have one for a short rental though. :-(
okay, you guys are giving me some hope. thank you!
i think part of it is also that i'm such a busybody. i don't know how to just relax sometimes.
i'm very good at grilling (well, more just the eating part) and drinking.
my opinion may also be colored by the first cabin my mom sent me - somewhere in wisconsin, kind of dark, and it looked like it smelled like moth balls.
the second one - up on lake superior - looked much more open, bright, and welcoming. plus, i love duluth. i could definitely spend some time around there.

Ah, the cabin!! I can't wait for the weather to warm up and we will head up to ours (my folks) every weekend in the summer. Sleeping in, enjoying a warm cup of coffee on the deck before brunch. (We sleep in long enough that we miss breakfast and just have brunch) Then maybe do some yard work, which I love since we live in a townhouse and don't have our own flower beds, etc. Then an afternoon nap, followed by some Ladder Golf or other yard game, then the drinks and appetizers start before dinner. After dinner we play outside a little more, then we get the bonfire started.
I did skip all of the other things we do that you said you don't enjoy as much. DH and my dad go fishing every morning and evening, we go out on the boat, swim in the lake, go water skiing, etc. All of those we have grown to love growing up at the lake. There are tons of other things to do to enjoy the week, though. Going in the the nearest town and looking at all of the little shops, stopping at the local bar and hanging out, catching a movie if it is raining. Tons of fun things to do up north!
If you're more into "doing stuff" than doing "lake" stuff , you could try one of the resort areas instead of a cabin proper. They always have other activities going on (horseback riding, big bonfires, etc.). I'm a cabin person and grew up going to one so that busy-body stuff is not of appeal to me at. all. but I understand how it might be a better fit for some other folks.
Going to the cabin for me is naps in the hammock, hanging out on the dock or boat, swimming, beach volleyball, cocktail cruises, yard games, reading a good book cover to cover, great food and good times with my family. I don't like to interrupt that leisure time.
We have had good luck finding cabin rentals on www.vrbo.com. It often takes me about half a day for me to "remember" how to relax.
Rather than a boat, what if you got canoes or kayaks? Unless you have easy access to a boat. You wouldn't have to worry about gas $ for the boat either...
You could also tie some tubes together and tie one end to the dock. That would be a fun lazy day... just floating around on the tubes and then when you want to be done, pull yourself in!
Crowd cut sent this to me this morning and I thought of this post. FYI this is my referral link:

I grew up spending lots of time "at the lake" so I look forward to it very much each year. I am also not super outdoorsy, but I will swim in the lake and go on short hikes.
I would look into a resort type place that has lots of stuff to do. You can still be at the lake and not have a boat! My parents used to have a boat, but don't anymore and we will rent one for a day when we do our annual 4th of July trip to Kavanaughs resort N. of Brainerd. The other time we hang out at the beach, go biking, go golfing, play tennis, swim in the pool, grill, and drink! We have always like Kavanaughs beucase it's not quite SO huge, but there are a lot of places like it in and around the Brainerd/Nisswa/Crosslake area. (and beyond!)
Another idea is on Lake Superior. We have spent time at various small resorts sans boats along the lake.
