I am having a day where i feel like a bad mommy :-(

I had a plan for Ella today that actually revolved around normal learning and she absolutely refuses to listen to me. She won't even draw a letter 'A' or write her name which I know she can do. In August she will go to preschool with 4yo kids and not 3yo kids. I just feel like she will be behind because she would much rather learn about dinosaurs, rain forests and jungle animals. I really feel like I have failed her. I wish it were possible to send her somewhere during the week so she would have to listen to someone but me. She just refuses to do what I ask. She won't be ready, will she?

Re: I am having a day where i feel like a bad mommy :-(

  • First of all, can I trump you?  I am a bad mommy because I teach people fall prevention (such as the aging population to reduce brain injuries) and just left a sweatshirt out with my 1 year old who is trying to learn to walk, and he tripped over it and we ended up taking him in to the ER.

But, back to the question- I think you are an excellent mom!!!  I think it is hard to separate the two roles, one of mother and the other of teacher (esp when they are getting to the age when you are really trying to teach them stuff they will be using in school).  Can you incorporate the fun stuff she likes in to the learning?  Like, hiding the letters in pictures of dinosaurs, etc, and having her find and copy them?  I am not good with ideas, so maybe someone else will have better stuff.  Just wanted to say you are a great mom!  And so creative!!!  I wish I could send my kid to you during the day!!!

  • First of all- the mere fact you are trying to work on things with her makes you a good mom!!  I can't tell you how many parents I worked with over the years were shocked that their kiddos were so compliant at school because it wasn't that way at home.  You might be surprised at how well she does.

If you want to chat about some ideas of things to do with her- PM me.  I spent 12 years teaching and might have some things you could try.

  • Oh stop it right now!  You are an excellent mother.  Ella is so smart and she will be ready.

FWIW, we had conferences with Maya's teacher last week.  She excelled in every area, but I was surprised at what they should know before transitioning to the 4 year old room.  They expect them to be able to recognize 50% of their letters, numbers, and shapes.  Maya had close to a perfect score, so that made me feel good because we don't have much time to work on that stuff at home.  I thought they would need to know more than that.  She can write her first name and they are now working on her last name and phone number.  And just because she has interest in other things, I wouldn't consider that hindering her education.  She's just a creative little girl.  I also have to catch Maya at the right time to engage her in specific things at home.  Sometimes she's just not in the mood and wants to do other things.  I try to incorporate it in what she's doing or just wait until another time.

I saw the letters Ella was writing this morning and I think she's doing a great job.  I wouldn't worry too much.  Also, when she's in the structured school setting, she will be doing those things at the same time as other kids, so don't worry about her not having interest.  She's a social little girl and I think she will adjust just fine.  :)

Oh no! :o( You poor thing!!

I think you are doing fine. Our preschool teachers at school talk about how kids come into the program with different levels of knowledge and it is about how they can improve individually, not how they match up with the rest of the class.  For example, they talk about how some kids know all their letters and numbers and some kids don't even know colors or shapes. You'll be fine! :o)

  • Thanks ladies, I am just having one of 'those' days! Ella is seriously so smart and absorbs information quickly, I just worry that she could care less about what normal 3yo kids should know. She can recognize all of her letters, numbers, colors and shapes and also write her name. I guess I just feel defeated when she won't do it for me, but brings me her rain forest encyclopedia and wants me to go over that again!

She's well above the curve then.  Maya can recognize all letters, colors, shapes, and all but 2 numbers and was way above the expectations for the 4 year old room.  You're both doing great!

  • I am not a teacher, but I would say let her focus on what she enjoys.  When we talk about this at Brighter Beginnings, they say not to worry and frankly that is what preschool is for.  She is 3 1/2 (I think) and obviously knows quite a bit.  She will be in good shape for pre school.  She is making the choice to learn - it just may not be what you think she should.

  • You're not a bad mommy.  You're just having a day.  I'm having a slew of them.  DS isn't into listening, what with the new baby.  So he's not purposefully being bad, but by not listening he ends up doing something sorta naughty, or at the very least annoying us.  Doesn't help that both DH and I are so freaking tired.  I just keep telling myself it will get better (eventually, right?  please?), and taking a deep breath.

I have no ideas, just compassion and commiseration!
