Obama decides not to release Bin Laden's death photo...

Do you think this is the right or wrong decision?  Why?

Although I wouldn't have minded seeing the picture, I think Obama made the right choice.  I read this quote from him on cnn.com, "That's not who we are.  The United States does not trot out this stuff as trophies." and I very much respect him for taking the high road on the matter.  I think the main reason so many people wanted to see it was for 'proof' that it was actually Bin Laden, but even if the photo were released, I am sure people would still question it...the same way they question Tupac's death.

I agree with you Xan. Not that I think Osama deserves much respect after the horrible things he has done to so many people, but he is still a human being and we really don't need to be showing pictures or videos of his death (I'm glad we respected Islam tradition and "buried" him right away).  It just gives more ammunition to his followers.  For all of those that want "proof" what good is a photograph anyways?  Photographs are easily altered.  If Osama was really still alive don't you think he would have released a video to discredit the US by now?

Very good point; he would already be openly laughing in our faces.

In situations like this, I think that it's best not to show the pictures.  Imagine how we would feel if someone had killed our "leader" (bastard or not) and then posted them for the world to see?

  • This may the first and last time I agree with anything Obama has done while in office.

  • Personally, I want to see proof.  However, you are absolutely right that photos can be altered and that it wouldn't have been sufficient proof anyway.  I mean, we have pictures of the man on the moon, and 42 years later some people still say it was a conspiracy.

So weighing the pros and cons of releasing them, I do (reluctantly) think he was right in his decision.
