Giving dog Benedryl

I also posted this on the Pets board, but I thought I'd ask you girls too. I know we had a discussion a while back about pets having allergies.  Well, my dog's allergies have kicked in. He chewed most of the hair off his tail near his butt in the last 2 days. This morning I put some anti-itch spray the vet gave us last time and I also have some anti-biotics I'll give him when I get home, but has anyone given their dogs Benedryl?  I have a few people at work recommending it, but my vet has never mentioned it before.

I feel terrible for my dog, he's home all day and miserable. I wish he wasn't so itchy Sad

Re: Giving dog Benedryl

  • I give Gidget children's benedryl. It makes a HUGE difference in her itching.

  • We give ours the dye-free Benedryl wrapped in a piece of lunch meat once a day when her allergies are bad.  She chews her paws so much and leaves wet spots everywhere.  It's so annoying and I feel bad for her.
  • higgy........ where are you?

  • We have had to give Gracie Benadryl a few times.  We have given her .5 mg - 1 mg per Lb of body weight depending on how bad her reaction is.

  • We give our dog a Claritin every day in the spring and fall months. Just throw it in his bowl and he eats it right up with his food.  He still has at least one bad allergy related experience per year but we think the Claritin helps!

We give my dog the 30mg benardyl tablets.  We usually just give him 1, but sometimes a second one if it's still not working.  (also note that my dog is 90+ lbs)

Also, keep in mind that Benadryl will make your dog drowsy...

Is this normal when your dog has allergies?  Itching and biting near the butt is also a sign of tape worms.

If it is allergies you can administer up to 1 mg/lb every 8 hours (or 3 times a day)

Yes, it is normal. He'll chew either near his butt or one of his paws.
