Eat healthy this Cinco de Mayo

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, check out our healthy, happy guide to eating at your fave Mexican restaurant. Ol?!

Appetizers

The Good

Salsa and Guac: Skip the chips and dip one soft tortilla in spicy low-cal salsa and healthy-fat-filled-guacamole.

Ceviche: Spice things up with this Latin classic. Raw fish is marinated in lemon juice and spices for a light, protein-packed starter.

Tortilla Soup: This tomato-based Mexican-style chicken soup is filling without being fattening. Just dial down the cheese and sour cream.

The Bad

Nachos Supreme: Between the cheese, beef, sour cream and chips, just one plate of these bad boys can mean thousands of calories.

Taquitos/Flautas: Tortillas are stuffed with meet or cheese, rolled and deep-fried: calorie bomb.

Entrees

The Good

Fajitas: Sizzling, skillet-cooked shrimp or chicken fajitas are a great main meal.

Soft chicken or fish tacos: Forgo beef and a fried hard tortilla to save serious calories.

Tostada: To be clear, the giant deep-fried shell is a killer ? but if you leave the shell behind, you have a tasty low-carb, veggie packed salad.

The Bad

Chimichangas: Basically a deep-fried burrito, this caloric nightmare was invented in Arizona, not Mexico.

Chile Rellenos: Green peppers are stuffed with cheese, breaded and deep-fried, showing that even vegetarian options can be unhealthy.

Sides

The Good

Black Beans: Full of fab fiber and protein, these little beans are a perfect accompaniment.

Corn Tortillas: Corn wrappers are lower in fat and calories than their flour counterparts.

The Bad

Extra toppings: Mexican food is super tasty so don?t pile on the sour cream, creamy sauces, and queso.

Tamales: Lard, corn meal, cheese, and rich sauces don?t equal a healthy combo!
