Re: Marcy

  • It wasn't so bad. There was no hippie love or nipple comparison, so that was nice.

I was hoping she'd speak more about pumping and returning to work. Actually the only reason she touched base on it was because I asked 5 minutes before the class ended.

It probably should have been two classes, but it was really helpful.

I'm gonna give it the ole college try.

  • I felt the same about my class. I really wish they had talked about pumping.  I struggled when I returned to work.

  • Just take it one day at a time, and know that it does get better! Ugh, I can't even think about returning to work and pumping, guess I need to soon though.
  • She said that if I'm returning to work at 6wks (ha!) then I need to start pumping on week 2....we'll see how all this goes.

  • Why would you start week 2? I thought you pump one day for the next. And add one pumping session after the first morning feeding to start a stash, but I don't know why you'd have to do that for 4 weeks. Hopefully the experienced pumpers chime in.
  • I pumped a few times a couple weeks before I went back. I give the sitter a week's worth at a time and she thaws it as the week goes.

If anything else, pumping beforehand is good just to get your body used to the pump. Also, it is less stressful to be a few days ahead so i f anything makes your supply drop, you can relax and not have to worrying about supplementing (instead of stressing more which lowers your supply even more).

  • I was figuring on pumping at least once or twice a day starting week two to start stock piling milk. Eventually I'm going to have business trips where I'll have to pump and dump. An over supply will help in that scenario as much as possible.

We'll see...this is all happening in my head and not reality so it could go either way.

  • It's not just about pumping, but getting the baby used to the bottle.  "They" say to wait a couple weeks before introducing the bottle so there is no nipple confusion.  Basically, that means if you give your baby a bottle too early they might just decide that since the bottle is easier to eat from to heck with breastfeeding.

Starting early is also about getting a stock pile started.  Also, a lot of woman experience a change in their supply when they start pumping.  The early start gives you time for your body to adjust to the new demands.

  • Marcy- A number of women on my bump board have gone on business trips and managed to save their milk via hotel fridges and coolers so they didn't have to pump and dump. It's a PITA but possible if you can't handle seeing that precious milk going to waste.

  • Here's my question to you pumping ladies

Apparently my milk consistency and quality is starkly different from week 2 than like week 6.

Would I be saving and storing the week 2 milk, using it immediately, or just attempting to build my production levels up and dumping it?

  • Save it!!!  The earlier milk is actually better then the later milk.  Get the proper freezer bags, and you can freeze breast milk for quite a long time.

  • In a regular freezer it lasts 3-6 months, in a chest freezer 6-12.
