Gardens

Has anyone put their garden in yet? I did and it's looking pretty pitiful :( So sad.

Re: Gardens

  • Me! My broccoli, kale, spinach, onions, and root veggies look great. My tomatoes and peppers don't look bad but they don't look great. I've been covering them every night, but I still think they get too cold. I'm hoping they pull through. If not, I guess I'll start some from seed.

I still have planted my cukes, zuchinis, okra, or beans.

  • i've always heard not to plant until after mother's day...so that's what i'm planning on. tilling this weekend and then planting next week.
  • Yup! We have a bunch of stuff in, but some still on deck! Ours looks pretty good yet, except Jovie seems to think one of our tomato plants shouldn't be in the ground. She has ripped it out 3 times, it keeps bouncing back though. We just planted potatoes, onions, and cabbage in our Ankeny community plot last night and I was surprised to see we are one of the last ones to plant. So far our stuff is doing ok with the cold. The weather this weekend should give it a shot of growth!
  • I literally just finished planting last night. Strawberries are hanging in there. I've got corn, pepper and tomato sprouts.

We have so many large natural rocks in our yard that I had the girls pick up buckets full and they outlined each of the veggie beds with them. That's a lot of rocks! lol

  • No veggies here, but my MIL is helping me do my annual flowers and plants today. The lady a the greenhouse said that just this week they feel comfortable putting things in the ground because of the favorable forecast. So exciting! :)

  • No we were waiting for warmer temps and a sale on veggies.. Last year around this time, Home Depot ran all of theirs half price for a weekend.. I was hoping for that again this year.. anyone seen starter plants on sale? Otherwise they are like $3.50/each and that adds up fast!

Actually, a lot of crops can go in while the threat of a frost is still looming: kohlrabi, spinach, kale, broccoli, radishes, beets, carrots, peas, cabbage, onions, and potatoes all do well in colder conditions. Some of them actually perform better in cold weather.

It's best to wait until after Mother's Day to plant cukes, tomatoes, peppers, zuchinnis, beans, and okra. I was naughty this year. I got anxious and now I might be paying for it. :-(
