Hilton Head?

Anyone been to Hilton Head? We were considering some other SC locations, but are thinking Hilton Head might be the easiest and cheapest. We've never been there before though.

We've heard not to go to Myrtle Beach because it's just too too crowded, but what about HH? We'd be going in like a week, so I think it'll be before the summer season.

What do you think?

Re: Hilton Head?

  • I've personally never been to HH, but I have heard great things about it. When my parents where together they did a week long live aboard sail boat diving trip out of HH.

  • you should look into Seabrook Island, SC where we go. Thor and her fam came with us last year. i was suprised that the prices for rentals are pretty affordable (i guess though it depends on your budget). HH isn't the cheapest place, so i'm guessing if you can afford that, you can afford Seabrook. The nice part about Seabrook is that it's a gated community wiht 2 country clubs (=amazing pools!) and beach access (private!). i can show you our house that we rent if u want to see it.

also...it's a 30 min drive to Charleston, which is nice to be to a large city but still far enough away that it's secluded.

i've been to HH once and it was ok...maybe people had talked it up so much i guess i wasn't that impress but i know people love it. i think it's prety popular though so it might be crowded. when are u thinking of going?

  • We looked at Seabrook and it looks really nice - the thing about that is that because it's such last minute, I wasn't finding much that was in our price range that also had a pool.

We're looking at going next weekend, so like the 15th to the 21st, or whatever that is. It's just the 3 of us, so we don't want a huge house, and we want a pool since I think Fin will prefer that to the beach.

We're definitely interested in Seabrook too though, so anything that you can send me about where you stay and where you book it through would be helpful. We want to book in the next day or two! :)

  • I've never been, but I've heard good things about it.  Have you looked on VRBO?  That's where we always rent from and have never had any issues.
  • ok so, ideally we wanted a pool at the house. but, that was just out of our price range. plus, the country clubs at Seabrook are BRAND NEW and amazing. yeah, you have to load the car up but really, the pool is MUCH easier than the beach. just take some towels and a float and you're good. the one club has a totally separate pool for kids wiht zero entry and a water 'mushroom'. the other club has one big pool with one end zero entry and a nother water feature.

here's a pic of the one pool: image

  • so yeah, we found our house on VRBO. it has 3 bedrooms and 3 baths and is one story (awesome for vacation....jsut easy, especially for just 3 people). the master is GORGEOUS (thor got to sleep there!).

here's the link to our house...we go the end of August. it's hot as a biotch then, but we're cheap :) also...they did just had a room over the garage..so now it's 4 bedrooms and the same price to rent.

  • So do you have to pay to use the country clubs?

  • we did last year....it was i think like $250 for everyone staying in the house. this year, that cost is inlcuded in the week's rent (at no extra charge...so it's actually cheaper this year!). so, if you're only going for a few days...not sure how that works out. you'd have to ask.

  • it says in the description that the Amenity Card (the access to the country clubs) is included in the rental charge.

the owners are british and super nice :)

  • I lived in HHI in the summers when I was in college so I love, love, love it there. Brings back fond memeories!

The "season" there really starts Memorial Day weekend. If you go before then you're fine - after you're super crowded. If you decide to go and have specific questions just page me. I will tell you that Sea Pines Plantation is where most of the good stuff is and you have to pay to get in there so sometimes it's better to just stay in there and pay a little more (hard to explain, but it's like a huge neighborhood, but that's where the lighthouse is and South Beach Marina where Salty Dog is. There's also a beach in there that's less crowded and good for the little ones).

Really lots of the SC Islands are great. Kiawah is good, but expensive I think. Also I hear Edisto is nice. Never been to SeaBrook, but I'm sure it's great too. Loved that house the other girls stayed in last year. So freaking gorgeous. Dafuskie is also awesome, but I think you can only get there by boat. It's a little off the beaten path okay really of the beaten path) with nothing to do, but the beach is pretty.

Sullivan's Island is super great, but it's technically Charleston = expensive/crowded.

FWIW I'd go to any of those place over Myrtle Beach any day. I do like Myrtle, but it's got nothing on the Islands. It's way too touristy/over the top for my taste.

  • totally agree wtih Kare. we didn't go to Seabrook becuase it was gated...but when we got there, that was really nice. it's like a big neighborhood and we liked that. i could picture Bennett on a bike riding all around when he's older :)

we looked at Edisto and Kiawah...Kiawah is more pricey bc it's a little more popular. it's not far from seabrook. edisto is more affordable.

  • I just looked at a map. Kiawah IS so close to Seabrook. I never noticed. When H was deployed and I was bored I would drive over to Kiawah to this little shopping center (when I lived in Charleston obviously not TN). They had the cutest little drug store/ice cream place. So fun!

Freshfields Village! ok so, there's a round-a-bout there...and one exit is Kiawah, one is the shopping center and the other is Seabrook! yeah...super close. we went ot that shopping area a lot and had lunch at the drug store! :)

  • seabrook is a mile long and kiawah is 1 mile from seabrook. LOL LOL LOL

    HH, I haven't been since I was a toddler so I don't remember.

MB, we went when we were engaged in March. It was empty. There is a ton to do there. Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, fireworks, shopping, outlets, Medieval Times (joe freaking loved that place!), plus a huge huge beach. May is not a crowded month for vacations since kids are in still in school. You won't have a ton of senior week college kids at this time of year but probably some. Most HS kids are still in school. I would assume the same for HH though honestly. Most kids are going to hit up the more popular beaches.

  • Oh yeah, if you go to a more popular vacation spot, you can try to get a hotel that is 25& over to get a room. That way, you won't have to worry about any college senior trippers there.

We went to MB for our HS senior trip. OHHHHHHH memories!

Are you guys getting the same house this year? Is your sis going or just your dad?

  • yep! got the same house. they added a 4th bedroom over the garage (which also has a sitting area with leather couches and a wall-mounted flat screen!) and it's the same price as last year PLUS the amenity card is now included in that weekly price. cool huh? even cooler..my dad's paying :) and yes, my sis is going too!

  • That is going to be awesome! I am so jealous. i am dying for another vacation.
  • i didnt read all the responses so if i am being redundant i apologize. i have only been to MB not HH. if it's a last minute trip i wouldnt rule out MB if you can find something you can afford there. it's probably not as nice but it's not terrible. we went in the summer and the beach wasnt crowded at all. i think if you stick to outside MB (like north or south, cant remember) then it's more relaxing. the actual town itself is kitschy, but there is a lot to do. so if it ends up being your only option i think you will still have a good time.
